take it to Pitlane Performance in Frankston and let Mick take care of it,he's by far the most respected and responsible workshop/tuner that specialise in the Turbo falcon and will only diagnose and replace what's needed.

this sounds like it needs a workshop that knows the falcon inside out :)

I will talk to my mechanic about this. My car is serviced at Moe City Ford and if he thinks that is the way to go, then that might very well be the way I will go. I don't think my engine will be fixed on site but will be sent away to be repaired. If I can get it repaired somewhere that loves Turbo Falcons, then my baby will get the best I can afford.

Actually Puff raise a good point there. If we're starting to talk much more than a short block swap, I would consider taking the whole show to a specialist tuner or even a performance engine builder. While its apart, might as well go to town

this is a rare instance where I would not recommend more power, due to the unique situation the OP is in.

I don't want more power, ta very much. I can only just afford the insurance on him as it is! I don't want to modify what I consider to be perfection, except for his No. 5 cylinder...

I will leave it in the hands of my mechanic to know what to do and where to send it to be fixed. If I wanted power I would have got an XR8 (except at the time they were being rebadged FPVs). I just bought Vipir because he looked good and made me feel better following my husband's death. I sure as heck don't want to join him and orphan my kids!

We are hoping that maybe Ford might come to the aid of the party and help out with the costs. But first, everything must be photographed and documented and submitted to Ford Australia. If I go anywhere away from a Ford dealership at this stage, I might lose any chance of Ford's support in this matter.

I really cannot thank you all for your knowledge and contributions. My poor mechanic is going to be shocked at my increase in education from Friday to Monday!

I promise to keep you all posted. If I have had this problem, there might be someone out there who may experience the same thing.

Cross your fingers for me that it is simple (ha ha ha!) and straightforward and fixable for a sum of money less than the redraw on my mortgage.

PS: I'm starting to like the Trend EcoSport they've loaned me. Despite it's front wheel drive, 4 cyl, auto...it's actually quite a neat little vehicle. Bit of a girly car though.

Am I betraying my surly brute?

Hi Leonie.  Firstly let me say I feel your pain.  I am very attached to my baby as well, and for similar reasons.  My late father was in to cars in a big way and passed away in 2010 (only 54), but I'd owned my XR6T for a couple of years by then and I was proud to have shared it with him.  He was impressed with it even though it wasn't a V8 GT like the XW he owned back in his youth.

If something is ever seriously wrong with my car I'll be a very unhappy chappy.  I expect one day that will happen, given how I drive it and the number of kms on her.  Always warm her up AND down though, plus change oil and filter at 7,500kms.  So far so good.  Luckily I've had this forum and its awesome members to draw on for some of the smaller stuff, which I've either fixed/upgraded myself or if too big a job I've had decent enough luck with the mechanics I've chosen.

Back to your topic though.

The point you make about losing assistance from Ford if you go elsewhere is very valid.  I hope they do help you out.  If things start to look bleak at the official dealership then please take the above advice to go talk to Mick at Pitlane.  Your car deserves it and so do you.  I've been reading these forums daily for about 8 years now and I can tell you he is one of the most helpful, knowledgeable and honest people on here.  If I lived in Vic I would be taking my car there 100% of the time, even if I had to drive 5 hours to get there!  He does run a performance workshop but don't let that put you off.  If you tell him you love it as it is in factory spec he won't think less of you or try to push things on you for the sake of a quick buck.

 

Viper is a lovely colour, you've chosen well.  My ideal Aussie Ford would be a Phantom coloured BFII Typhoon.  Sadly this does not exist as Phantom was only ever in the original BA series of cars.  It's very similar to the FG Viper though.

 

These engines are very tough, it seems you're a bit unlucky which is undoubtedly heartbreaking.  Whatever you do don't sell the car unless it's a last resort before the house!  If you're like me you'd forever regret it.

 

If it helps provide hope, here's proof that (barring any unusual circumstances or abuse) they can go for a long time, even if pushing 50% more power than factory like mine.  I took this pic today.  My car is put through its paces many times during the 500km I drive a week.  Plenty of WOT on the freeway on ramps and the odd heavy brake and 90° corner up in the hills on the way home.  I didn't buy it for the fuel economy hahaha!  It still runs great and has been ultra reliable for me as a work and weekend car.

I hope you get that engine fixed and you are reunited with a healthy Vipir soon so you can keep on driving off into many more sunsets together with the kids in tow :asciidity:

Having worked in a few dealerships over the years I would suggest a few things. Ensure that you highlight the fact that there were issues previously with the car which you reported and tried to rectify but couldn't be diagnosed. If they were within warranty period that is important (sounds like the first vibration issue was back in warranty period?). If you have a complete and exclusive ford dealer service history they may help out a bit with costs. They don't have to but may if you are lucky. Hopefully you can work something out with them to reduce the cost somewhat, but obviously you will still be up for a fair bit of money. Rest assured once it's fixed you should have a fresh engine and new lease of life with your beloved car-dont need to sell it after its repaired!

Hi all.Many  years ago my Ford xDsedan measured low in the fifth cylinder and ran very rough especially on start up.

Mechanic friend suggested I very slowly pour water into carburetor while running and rev hard to keep running while continuing to very slowly pour water into carb. 

Turns out the problem was valve stem guide. Pouring water would decoke valve and pressure  would come up again to match other cylinders for a little while. 

Interesting  seeing there appears no cylinder  or ring damage to Viper

Of course it may be totally unrelated 

Hope you get best fix.
