Since the Red Line is "dependant on driving conditions" does the SSS in Sports Performance mode hold it to red line taking these varying factors into account.

To clarify - does the SSS Perf mode change at the same RPM all the time ort does it change its shift pattern based on the same criteria that the red line changes?

Since maximum torque is achieved between 2000 and 4500 rpm, it doesn't make sense to try to rev it out to redline, instead the ideal situation is to stay in an area of maximum power.

My experience with the SSS is that it takes you out to about 5000-5500 rpm before changing, resulting in maximum power at gear changes, without hitting the limiter.

Given the relatively low max rev limit of around 6k, I'd like to make the point that any mods made to the car that introduce lag, such as larger turbo or intercooler, will reduce the USABLE revs that you have to play with, and whilst you may get more power, you may find the car less enjoyable. STI's and GTR's have 8k revs to play with, so it's very different. Given the Ford has a 92/99 bore/stroke configuration it looks like it's set up more for torque rather than high revs..... and good low down torque makes for more effortless driving, rather than boy racer style driving.

The problem is, and I think due to the low compression, that low down power is not really there either. Yeah ok, you get the power above 2500, but need to change at 5500 to keep it in the torque range. I think based on the comments so far that any mods to this car, including Turbo etc, should probably be focused on low rpm, rather than high? Which would probably mean leave the turbo and boost alone??

Compression of 8.7:1 is not low for a turbo car, and given that there is variable valve timing, there should be good low down torque. I think the problem is more the extra weight the car is carrying that causes any sluggishness. I guess that sub 2500 revs is where the V8 may be better. In regards to be last post, running more boost will not impact lag. I always add more boost, subject to compatability in other areas.

This sorta thing sounds like my cousins GTR suffers from.It bangs the Rev limiter really fast in the lower gears and it then bangs the speed limiter (180kph) pretty soon after.Turbo rush is good.Just need a XR6T now to experience it often.

That variable red line thing is based on what, engine temp, driving conditions, throttle???

I have an xr6 turbo ute that suffers the same problem... it has forged engine and runs 17 psi so as you can imagine it gets up and goes... and in 1st gear it hits the rev limiter hard and often. when it hits the rev limiter it sort of flutters and misses for about 15 or so seconds and if you dont keep the revs up it will stall. but if you keep the revs up, like highway driving it will eventually come good. is this the sort of problem you all have when it hits the rev limiter???

Just learn to change gears!

If you've got a built engine why don't you increase the rev limit.

Mine revs to 7400, so it's far more useable.

1st gears pretty much useless in standard cars, can only imagine what you guys put up with. Either way rev limiter means change gears, I can't stress that point enough. Seriously that's what it's there for, don't just let it keep bouncing.

I hate repeating myself but but I feel it 's important, when you hit the limiter CHANGE GEARS. That is such a crucial point to driving and car I just can't help but bring it up again.

Believe it or not these cars DO have more then one gear and when the car is screaming/spluttering that means its time to change gears.

Seriously, this is important. Don't over look it.

I hope that helps.

Rev limit on an I6 - not much, lol. They're a long stroking engine. Rev 'em hard they die - simple.
