Explanation from elsewhere:

" To avoid increasing an entire eave line to the side of a house a spandrel is added so only the required eave is raised to suit ceiling heights"

So basically saves money.  Dunno on the gutter question, it's just where it naturally ends up following the edge of the room I guess.

That's just fhucking stupid lol

Looks like anus and is dangerous looking

I've never seen anything like that before tbh

Thank fuck it's on the far side of the house that people are less likely to see.  Once I get some flat board on there and paint it up it will be acceptable.

Why they think a random bit of wood is a good idea I'll never know.

No kidding...hard to find online examples!  Different builder has it on their glossary page with a pic

Spandrel

This is typically known as a spandrel-end. It is where two roof lines meet due to different heights in brickwork / ceilings to a home. A spandrel is an aesthetically way to finish where the two corners meet on the roof line

This looks slightly less shi t but still...lame.

In summary...watch out for those eave height differences if building!

Wouldn't it look nicer to just have the guttering come around to meet the brick wall? Perhaps it's not feasible. I'm not a builder.

Cringe...those builders don't spend much time learning English hahaha.  They really said it in such "a beautifully way".
