I say the smaller bench top is left over cut and its easier to cut for the sink at the end in stead of from cutting in the middle. In the first photo it looks like there is a big cap from the wall to the bench top. Wall not straight? I do like @Ralph Wiggum question.

Speak to the building supervisor, the sooner the better.

Surely it could have been at the other end Framers started on my house yesterday, and builder rang and said roof tiler is booked for after Easter

Cabinet maker client says it's standard location to avoid a big line like Arron says, but he reckons the join is crap and to make them neaten it up. The dark bit you are seeing is the back of the cabinet further down, not a gap to the wall. Thanks for checking though, the more eyes the better. The house plan is one of theirs that we have made a fair few changes to. In the original, the pantry end (left in first pic) had a doorway to laundry and the bench tops were shorter to allow you to walk right through (did not go all the way to the pantry wall). The join is probably at the maximum length they can get the stone, come to think of it...ours is probably that doorway space longer. Would be nice if they asked you these things beforehand but hey, entry level builder.
