I cut my Teeth on an ATX 990 (Tomac Edition) Still Have it

Got right into DH and moved onto a DH1

Hurt Myself way too many times on it (did more damage to me than my 99Kx250 every did)

So got rid of it and now have one of these-

NB pics for illustration purposes only, not my bikes.

Bringing back memories now ralph

You must be a few years older than me...ATX990 was the shiznet, remember early 2000's getting a Giant catalogue and poring thru it for hours on end

The DH1 had been out for a few years but I was gobsmacked when I first saw it, the first downhill bike that I remember

Later on got into it myself

Sold the DH to fund first ute mods

Still miss it

I started back in 1994. I was lucky enough to get a parts/service sponsorship from a shop here in Perth (even though I was living/competing in the Northwest) raced quite a few times in Perth and was approached by a Cannondale rep but it all went by the way side when work/beer/girls became the main focus. I'm hoping my son will get into either MTB or BMX when he gets a bit older.

Also- I spent every spare cent I had on that 990, had Mag21's on the front. Mavic C-sup Rims, White Bros Cranks, SGD Kevlar Seat (still have this in use on the rocky mountain!) Azonic Bars and Stems and XTR Groupset.

I've been loosely trying to restore it for a few years but the short/rear linkage bits are very hard to get and the BB and Headstock are both old school sizing making It hard to get parts for it.

Ok so you were properly into it...more of an expensive hobby for me

Never could be arsed to enter any races but for a while it's all we did on a Saturday

Mostly trails around Wollongong but every summer for a few years we'd do a trip or two to Thredbo or Stromlo or wherever, good times

My first DH bike was flogged by some low life pricks along with my brother's brand new (2005 model) DH Team...no contents insurance at the time so $6k down the drain for him

This one was an ex Ryan Lennox race bike so it had a damn hard life but decent bits incl 8" manitou dorado carbon forks which you never seem to see now

Some serious advances in tech between late 90's and mid noughties...would be whole worlds between the atx and the rocky mountain I'm guessing

Just got a Giant Anthem in the garage, really should take it for a thrash a bit more, still good fun

The main leap is brakes imho, funnily enough the RockShox Mag21's where air sprung and oil damped and then Judy's came along and the hot trend was to throw a set of Judd coils in them (Judy DH's 75mm of travel woooooooo!! my "XC" RM has 100mm front and rear.)

Fast forward to today and just about everything is air sprung again. Hydro Disc brakes are the best. I have XTR V-Brakes which where the shit back in the day but don't hold a candle to a set of Hydro Discs.

+1 for hydro discs...

I had avid juicy 7s on that bike which were top notch at the time, they only make it onto xc bikes now I believe

OH YEAH well I used to ride my Malvern Star home from school with a couple mates and we'd kick around a milk carton riding on the empty volleyball courts.
