Looking at the experience that people have had with unichip prior to LS1 Edit and the way it is now, the factory computer looks to be superior. The LS1 PCM is a very powerful unit, the ford unit I imagine would be the same. And just like LS1 PCM I imagine the Ford PCM uses similar drivetrain safety programs that would maybe reduce outright power and I imagine would definetly stop a tuned car with a pigback computer making it's power constantly without the engine making a 'dummy spit'. Just how powerful the LS1 PCM is shows when very large cams making 320rwkw+ can be used and the idle and low down delivery isn't suffering.

:)

Nice to have some one from the "dark side "come to visit.

Agreed that maxxing out the factory ECU would be ideal , but Ford have done a number on this one and it is yet to be cracked succesfully to the best of my knowledge.

To date after market chips have successfully been tuned to deliver pretty much stock performance and idle around town with the power unleashed with application of the loud pedal.Given the relatively short period the T has been around some serious ground has been made by the various tuners.

Enjoy your stay

Thanks WhiteTee for the welcome.

Currently as far as I know the LS1 PCM can handle 500rwkw+ without any problems so I don't the Ford PCM would be any worse. Considering the amount of computing power that is in current car PCM's it shouldn't be a surprise.

When Unichip was the only thing on the market to make power on an LS1 other than the 10-15% mafs the gains were good for their time but with safe guards in the locked Expensive Daewoo unit the gains were lost after repeated aplications of the loud pedal. And now with LS1 Edit it's all history :censored:

I'm not a tuner but I have followed the LS1 very closely since it introduction here and have been around very knowledgable people who have been developing the LS1 since the beginning.

With the popularity of the BA compared to past models it will only be a matter of time until the computer is cracked.

Hope I don't sound like a know it all :P

Thanks Peter, lot of worthwhile detail there! The points you raised about the wear & tear of vehicles whilst being on the dyno, are something I hadn't thought about but are an important point.

Only thing, I've heard (through other people) that some people are experiencing problems with aftermarket piggyback devices on the BA xr8 and GT's with the factory ECU actually "outsmarting" the chip...how true I'm unsure of the details, 1 guy lost 24kw's. Could be other things on the car (or the ECU) but could this at all be possible whererby the ECU interrupts the loop?

cheers for taking time to write such an indepth reply!

No promlem Rodderz, it seems that there is much about tuning of EFI engines that is still a myth to many. It really does not matter if its a porsche or a Hyundai the same principles apply to tuning an engine to have optimum power, that is perfect ignition timing and air/fuel ratio's across the entire RPM and LOAD sites of the computer.

Here is an example worth serious thought as it proves my theory on engine management tuning. For three years running we ran UNICHIP on Jim Richards 911 porsche GTP car and the engine management type was free in this class. Many cars ran full stand alone engine management systems whilst a number of 911's including Jim's car ran the UNICHIP computer.

If you looked at lap times there was very little difference between the 5 fastest cars and looking at the max vehicle speed on the straights demonstrates the power of the vehicle, the difference between the fastest 5 cars was approx 3 kph.

Now not with standing the fact that Jim is an excellent driver there are other drivers which have plenty of skill running full bloan engine management systems which had in many cases less power than jim's Unichip tuned porsche.

In fact after one GTP race in Sydney the race officials instructed the fastest cars and drivers of the top 10 911's to a dyno to measure power in order to achieve a more level competition within the class.

What was interesting out of this execercise was that Jim's car was measured to have the 2nd highest power level out of the 10 cars tested. Point is that seven cars out of the top ten were on full stand alone engine management computers and yet the Unichip tuned car recorded the 2nd highest power of the ten cars.

So what is it that makes power? It is the combination of perfect ignition timing and air/fuel mixtures, and it does not matter how you achieve this combination, by a full stand alone computer or through reprogramming the stock computer or by a clever interceptor computer (unichip) you will achieve the identical power result if the timing and mixtures are identical.

On the ford BA 5.4 once the tune/mapping is generated it is a myth that the stock ford computer over rides the inceptor and its stored maps. I have tested cars which we tuned 6 to 9 months ago and the power graphs are virtually identical. This is proof that the unichip continues to provide constant unchanged power increases across time and many thousands of kilometers.

Fact is that most tuning/power problems are tuner related not technology related. We have tuned many different engines including ford and LSI V8 engines with huge sucess, and currently the fastest XR6t and LSI Expensive Daewoo in Australia are tuned via unichip computers :censored: . Sorry for the long post its difficult to keep it shorter on a techinical issue.

so peter, is cons ls1 the quickest ls1 in australia and its not exen supercharged that's quite impressive.

I could just imagine how much better the T's are going to do in the middle of winter.

Owna, that right Con's LSI Late model camira is the quickest in Australia as of now and it is N/A, quite impressive even though the car does run some gas. The car ran a 10.77@127 mph from memory and is tuned via the Unichip :hiwelcome: computer. No doubt that the guys at CandV performance know a thing or two about setting up a fast street/drag car, whether its a Ford or Holden.
