When I fitted an aftermarket intercooler to my XR6 I had it powdercoated satin black because I'm right into the stealth look.....

I now have an F6 Typhoon and want to fit the same cooler to it but on the F6 the cooler is "supposted" to stand out...(it's all about maintaining a "factory"look)..

So the question is.....what's the best way to remove the powdercoat?...

Some have said to get it bead blasted....but I reckon that's gonna' leave a rough surface on the alloy?

Another guy suggested getting it soaked in a caustic bath......but that's not going to be very kind on the alloy as well?....
I'm thinking paint stripper and a garden hose.......but I'm worried about getting left over crap stuck in the fins?.....

Which way do you think I should go with this guys?.....advice appreciated.... ;)

Assuming you have removed the I/C from the car, I'd tape off the inlet and outlet to keep crap out then use a paint stripper in a aerosol can so you can get it down into the fins.

You need to be carefull of the type of stripper you use as some (methylene chloride ) based strippers can damage the finish , perhaps there are some aircraft people on here who could recommend something? Failing that I'd ask the nearest alloy wheel refinishers what they use.

This is a eco friendly water based one, not in aerosol though. http://www.sea2skyglobal.com/spc_203_rt.php

Let it sit for 5 mins then wash off with a garden hose followed by a waterblaster from about 500mm away to push the last bits through the fins and out the back. Getting too close with the blaster may bend the fins over, but they handle high speed winds and dust etc so go easy and you will be fine. Repeat till your happy with the results.

A polish of the end tanks with some autosol and she will look brand new!

Starting with the blaster instead of the hose will see lumps of caustic stripper splashed back into you face etc, kinda sucky.

That's a good idea, saves busting it up or marring it accidentally.
