so while I pull the shaft in and out is it normal for the internals to sort of separate, while pullin on it it felt like was only holding by the rubber boot and as a result ive torn the boot in half and left with most of the shaft in my hand and everything after the boot still in the diff?

^^ yeah that.....hold it as square as possible when you hit it home. A person holding the shaft while you hit it and make sure you put the nut on abit to protect the thread.

Something that we didn't liok at until it was almost toooo late was - Repco gave me a 28 spline shaft when I needed a 30 spline but thankfully it was noticed just before the shaft was hit home with the rubber mallet
