Got to say it was a pretty good way to end a holiday. I admire phil's commitment to what he does and even to have the time to stop by and compare notes face to face with this guy was fun, but I soon learned he is a guy after my own heart with wanting to learn and give it a fair crack himself. Tip of the hat to you sir. So when we got talking about the beast not running right, well you just get stuck in & have a go. I've not really worked on a car with someone that is focused like Phil and we could just see each other running around doing everything. No need to double check, no need to talk, just very intense work. So a good time had by all, and seeing a smile again after fixing it up was pretty cool.

Other things I learnt about Phil, very meticulous (exhibit a; every project he bloody works on), loves a bargain and knows everything there is to know about getting what you need at a great price. And when he says he doesn't know much about cars, he isn't joking but dam 11/10 for enthusiasm which always makes up for it. Which brings me to the thing that has always had me confused, he does all this fantastic work with the most minimal tools & work area. 0_o impressive to say the least. Guy must have balls the size of grapefruit cause something that intimidates me seems like just something you do to him. And as I'd said to him, what he does with his posts will save my ass when I get some time to clean up my ute.

In all, most important thing I learnt was not to f*ck with Perth city council. They WILL tow your ride. I came out to find a tilt tray literally about to chain up & drag my hire car. Did I f*cking sh*t myself! I got the philmeup experience working at 2am and didn't get a park under the hotel for the night. I got up to shift it in the morning & im lucky I'm not at an impound yard getting that thing out right now! But in all, good times

I've been holding back from making the statement but I did allude to it last night, this is going to be a fair challenge getting this ute ready, as much as I don't know phil, if there is a way to do it, he'll do it. But a fair dam challenge.

Great thread. The ute looks awesome, I cant wait to see it in person some day.

Regarding the 5 gas test I'm not sure I would be scared of it. I have had to do the test with two different cars for engineering and if I can pass it you can too. The first car was a 2003 Hilux 3.4L v6 using a TRD supercharger and full long tubes and exhaust system. We had no control over the engine management. Zero. The car was running a total factory ecu and tune with normal 98 fuel. I tried the test the first time and failed miserably. I replaced the 02 sensor with a new one and bought a euro 4 compliant cat convertor, my engineer advised me to do this. On the next try we got the engine (Mostly the exhaust system) stinking hot, for example it was sitting there for a good 4 or 5 minutes running at about 2-3000 rpm and it passed this time. So supercharged, custom exhaust, no custom tuning - pass. A good cat converter is essential here.

The requirements for a pass change as the cars get newer, one benchmark is 2003 so I had to meet that one. I think the next is 2007 and the last one was 2010 (Might have changed its been a while since I was there). The tests were conducted at Roadbend Jaguar in Welshpool. Cost is Under $200 per test. This test isn't the IM240 that was getting spoken about at one stage, that is a totally different kettle of fish. This test is conducted at idle and at 3000rpm no load so most likely no boost in your car.

My current "Fun" car is a 1995 200sx fitted with an 5.7L and 6 speed from a vx. This car has also passed the 5 gas test obviously engine swap etc etc needed engineering. It was fitted with long tube headers, custom intake and 2 cats from a vz ss. This car passed the requirements for a vehicle that was built in 2010! It only had to pass for a vehicle build in 2000 (Year of the engine). Running normal 98 fuel and with god knows how many km's on that motor. Custom tuning, this helps a lot if the person doing it knows what they need to do. Cats need to get hot. Really hot. On the 200sx we had the headers glowing. I presume the tuner manipulates the tune to increase the exhaust temperature at idle and at the 3000rpm point this heats up the cats and the hotter the better. This is why modern cars have cats as close to the engine as possible.

My friend also passed a similar vehicle with a cam running a 228/232 - 113 LSA (lots of overlap means its emissions unfriendly) by mixing in a bit of e85. Which brings me to my next point. If you put that ute on e85 tune it up and there is a cat in there at all it should pass the 5 gas test. I'm not sure if any of the ford tuning guys in WA have had to deal with the 5 gas tests and stuff but turbo engines with stock cams should be a cake walk. Especially on e85. I also have a feeling that to get your car compliant using an aftermarket intake they are going to ask for the 5 gas anyway even if the exhaust is standard. So its either change intake and exhaust to standard or pass the test.

Having said all that ( Or written in this case). If you change the intake manifold and exhaust back to stock I don't see why you would need an engineer at all. Its just extra work and you can clearly handle that.

I'd rather keep as much stuff on the car as possible for engineering and inspection, but it looks like the cat is going to be a problem. Sold my Plazmaman, the cat was actually made by a place called Advance Headers, in South Australia. The email from them:

"1) The cat we use is a 100 CPI metallic substrate Euro 2 high flow cat converter.

2) No unfortunately I do not have any engineering reports or anything like that, we do not have much to do with that side of things as the laws are different in each state.

3) I don't think there would be a way to get passed a proper emissions test with the high flow cat converter.

If you need to go through a proper emissions test the best thing I would recommend would be to put the standard dump pipe and cat converter setup on the car for it, our dump and cat setup is a direct bolt in replacement so there will be no cutting or welding required, it will just bolt off and the standard stuff will bolt on then once you have passed if you like it will all just bolt straight back on.

The cat we use is a really high quality cat, as in build quality, so it wont rattle loose and will take quite a lot of power through it. But it is a high flow cat designed for good flow so as such will more than likely not pass a proper emissions test.

99% of aftermarket cats will not pass an emissions test so the best bet would be to re-fit the standard stuff to get it registered for you."

Really, really, really not looking forward to swapping cat and dump pipes back and forth, but it's gotta be done. Me = large person. No hoist here. Not going to be fun trying to get under the car here.

I'm going to go for a country drive soon and try a couple of country town inspection places (ie country workshops). Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will pass it as it is. Never know.

So Brad came to Perth and didn't even visit the rest of us. We should have put a cruise together..........

There was a cruise, but it was late at night and involved one car...

Your fault for not being around at 2am on a weeknight... :laughcont:
