But Phil tends to have a master plan so I'm sure that will unfold soon enough

I do all sorts of wheeling and dealing to get things at a lower cost.

This week I suddenly entered the world of buying and selling transmissions.

Something that I know almost nothing about. No experience, and almost no knowledge about what I'm dealing with.

Quite a crash course.

Getting it figured out though.

There may also be some more wheeling and dealing going on. There's another car in the transmission workshop that needs a certain rare transmission, and I know where there's a cheap one.

Right now I look like an idiot on here, but hopefully by Tuesday night I can explain a few things.

Why dick around with a second hand convertor of unknown history when a stock convertor rebuild is well under $500

I was given a price of $800 by Nigel to recondition my existing torque converter. And the converter from the NA ZF isn't suitable. Bugger.

I abandoned the plan to use the NA (naturally aspirated) ZF transmission, and went back to the original plan of buying a good turbo one.

Having spent all night researching ZF transmissions, I was able to make a much more informed decision today when given the news about the converter.

This was very useful: http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/78348-all-things-zf/

The NA ZF has 5 clutch packs. The BF turbo and V8 ZF has 6 clutch packs. The FG turbo one has 7 clutch packs.

The NA one is rated for 450Nm. The turbo one is rated for 600Nm.

The turbo one also has a stronger input shaft.

I knew about a couple of options on Gumtree, so started making calls.

For $1,400 I bought an FG Turbo ZF and converter with 23,000km on it. Yep, 23,000km. Way too good to pass up on that one.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/maddington/engine-engine-parts-transmission/ford-fg-turbo-6-speed-auto-trans/1046972765

That should take care of the transmission and converter requirements.

Being a later ZF, it's also got the steel pan already on it, so I can recoup some money by reselling the pan that I bought from Motospecs. That helps.

I'll also resell the NA ZF that I bought yesterday.

So, I've flipped back from something-temporary-to-get-the-car-mobile to a (hopefully) permanent solution.

Gonz is good but very busy so an urgent job to drop anything wouldn't be discounted unfortunately

I'm very pissed off at myself at the moment for not getting this car through a local inspection yet.

Fair enough, workshops are saying no to the dump pipe, cat and intake manifold.

So, now I've set myself a deadline..

I've committed to getting this car through an inspection next Thursday.

Im happy to purchase a set of rear brembos off you, to help recover some of your costs.

Keeping my rear Brembos, but can I interest you in an immaculate, low-km NA ZF transmission?

:wwww::devil:
