Hi guys (and girls) , im about to purchase my second b-series , I have a 6 speed manual BA mkii ute running 310rwkw ... and I just put a deposit on a BF auto 6 speed ZF running 298rww, only think I noticed aside from a crunch / scrap sound from the rear driver side (assuming its a bad bush) was the gearbox. I'm just wondering if it's normal for a ZF box to be very rough and snap into gears like a trick kit or shift kit. I am unsure if it's been built and strengthened to suit the power or if its just a standard box ( all the other ive driven havent been so rough , but werent running as much power either), the owner selling it says it was normal and adjusted for the tune - just checking to see if that's actually the case or if im buy a dodgy box. Its not slipping and gear changes are fast and when I stomp it , its manly when cruising around in "drive" 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd really seem to snap you back a bit...

any info will be helpful guys, thanks... if I left anything just ask and I will submit more info.

Sounds like the box has been tuned to me.Harshness depends on the level of settings the tuner has programmed into tcm.

Who tuned the car and trans?

The bloke said HPF in melbourne did the tune..... as he is from victoria and now brought the car to WA where I am, I have no real way of checking and I dont think a simple phone call is going to help me much unfortunately

lol I'm near wanneroo area if that narrows it down? I usually get my work done on my turbo ute by Darren at Monsta Torque in malaga, I used to use Xtreme ford tuning , but they're just too far away. Trouble is the guy I'm buying off is Down near melville (southern river) and he works a lot hence he's here from Victoria on business. Makes it extremely hard to make the distance and get to my guys at MT for an inspection.

I've just gotten off the phone with the guys down at HPF in Melbourne (I was told that's where all the work had been done).

They've told me the shift pattern had been changed.....they generally do it for any tune over 280rwkw, does that sound legit to everyone else - just concerned because as I say I've never owned a ZF and I didn't wanna dare step foot in the 4 speed trans zone.

Yeah sounds legit. 280rwkw does sound a bit low to be fiddling with shift profiles but each tuner has their own way of doing things. Does the car have an Xcal included? That should contain the stock trans tune

Yeah hes got the older X3 and ive got a spare X4 as well lying around at home if I ever need it as well (I unlocked it off an old vehicle I owned), his x3 only has the factory tune and the tune hes running now (hes told me he doesnt know what tunes are on it - so assume its just factory and the 293rwkw tune)
