Ferodo Ds Pads Report

Hi Guys,

I fitted a set of DBA T3 rotors all round and Ferodo DS pads. Brad from vicperformanceparts looked after me when I mentioned this forum.

The new pads grip much better than the old pads but they make more brake (not break) dust. I'm hoping that the extra dust doesn't mean the pads will have a short life.

Anybody out there using these pads and able to comment on life expectancy?

The big brakes I see on FPV's look great and I would have liked a set but this Ferodo & DBA T3 option works quite well for my street car application and it means I can keep the factory wheels. $2k for new 19" wheels on top of $4k for brakes and it starts to add up.

Sounds like you've got DS2500 pads - they're known for being some of the dustiest pads around. Good bite, but dusty.

They're good pads - they'll work well. You'll just be going nuts cleaning wheels all the time.

For Brembo calipers, brake pads are like picking football teams or car brands - everyone's got their favourite choice.

When I put 6/4 Brembos on my taxi a few years ago I did a bunch of homework to try and figure out which pads were the least dustiest.

I ended up using Hawk Performance ceramic pads. They're not cheap, but I've never had any heat fade. They still produce brake dust, but nowhere near as much as DS2500s (I've got a set that I've tried a few times). The Hawk dust also washes off wheels much easier than the DS2500 dust. I couldn't pick any difference in bite between the DS2500 and Hawk Perforamce ceramic pads.

Everyone's got their preferred choice of pad. Talk to Matt at Race Brakes Sydney on (02) 9609 1101 - he gets feedback about all sorts of different options. http://www.racebrakessydney.com.au

Brembo 6 piston front: HB616Z.607

Brembo 4 piston front: HB193Z.670

Brembo 4 piston rear: HB194Z.665

For cleaning wheels, I use a Hills weed sprayer bottle and CT18. You can buy specialised wheel cleaning spray bottles but they all still need physical contact (ie brush) to get the brake dust build-up off.

I'm interested in this too now, it seems.

Makes sense to replace the pads at the same time I'll be replacing the rotors, and the DS Performance Pads FDSR3028 run at $279.00 a set as per RBS's pricing. It specifically says they suit 4 piston Brembos, which I have, and DBA 42102S's, which I'm gonna order very soon. Worth getting?

I put on Ferodo DS and brand new T3.. Didn't take too long to start to shudder. No bite also. Pulled them out and put in Ultimates. I like them so much better. DS cause a bit of brown dust (still have them in the rear). Nothing like the black of the ultimates though.

The Ultimates being much more aggressive on the disc did "true it out" after about 10k

Ultimates meaning Bendix yeah? They were my first choice before seeing this thread. Figured it wouldn't hurt to see how they compare.

Now I just need to know which ones and where to get lol!

Oh, and 'true it out' means... bedded? Wear? Settled?

Bendix Ultimates. They are very aggressive on the disc but they are constantly skimming the disc and keeping them straight (true) so they don't shudder with normal street driving.

Where as the Ferodo DS are slightly aggressive, not enough to keep them true like the Ultimates. The shudder came on before 10k km

From my experience, cast iron vented hat discs just naturally moves around a bit. And you need that aggressive pad to keep them true. There are a few car manufacturers that do the same. Look at the disc of wheels covered in black brake dust on some relatively new european cars. They are chewed out. The disc is a consumable IMO. Two sets of pads to one set of discs. I just put up with the dust. This is the downside.

Fair call trana, I find with consistent hard braking the DS pads held up better than the Bendix and had better bite when warm/hot.

For daily use I'd definately go the Bendix.
