Hi all

Been playing with the thought of a FG xr6T for 18 months. Finally going to do it! Went for a happy lap in a auto (only ever driven manual really) and feel in love!

But I had my heart set on a winter white 2013/14... But been reading about rust. I don't want to have to have this stress..

My question is was the rust issue sorted by 2013?

Can't get a solid answer..

Those with mk2s or know for sure could you please tell me?

Thanks!

I had a 2014 GT in winter white and the problem will still exist. The paint on the FG's is super thin everywhere and there's strategic places on the chassis rails and engine bay that aren't painted and will rust as a result of where they are. There are some potential things you can do about it, like proper paint protection over these areas to help seal so that it doesn't oxidise...but never know 100%.

I have a 2012 mk2,mines blue obviously but my engine bay and under bonnet are painted with a black chemical type paint.what I mean is there is a coarse type substance mixed with it. No rust anywhere in the engine bay but there is surface rust on some parts of the underbody. But for some reason most likely dollars Ford discontinued it on later builds.

Don't let us put you off mate, they're not that bad,Ford has a 5 yr corrosion wty.the underbody areas are an easy fix. Engine bays it's noticeable around the bonnet hinge areas and parts of the under bonnet.but I've seen some ba/bf's that are a lot worse.they rust down where the chassis rails meet the firewall ( from what I've seen anyway) and the bootlid hinge area is bad as well. Fg's don't suffer these problems. If it's any comfort VE commys have some bad areas as well. Just buy one mate you'll bloody love it.

The blue with black engine bay is simply a cost cut. It's cheaper to paint the engine bay black. Same as a silver one. They have grey engine bays. It's just a base colour that's applied first.

As for the rust on whites, it's more noticeable on the whites.

I've been a painter for 18 years now and I was sceptical on buying a falcon exactly like you are.

Mine was under a year old when I bought it with 10,000km on it. Had the same signs of rust starting on all the very edges of the bonnet frame and engine bay seams.

It only took me 1 night to fix it.

Pull the airbox etc out for better access, find yourself some grey coloured Scotch brite and get some deoxidine. Then simply clean the rust of the edges and seams with it.

Once you have done that, get a can of Wurth cavity wax. Spray it In all the seams in the engine bay. Let it set for a day. Then wipe off any excess with a rag and some wax and grease remover. As dust and dirt will stick to it. You want it just in the seams.

3 years later it still looks peferct.

This is my experience.

Car purchased in March 2011, 10,000k's on clock, car build is 2011 50th anniversary white G6et.

Car was purchased and straight away had a aftermarket paint protection and a electronic rust preventer installed.

Didn't really know much about the whole electronic rust preventer/snake oil thing, I was just trying to keep the car looking as smick as!

At the time of purchase I moved house to within 500m of the beach for approximately 18months (garage faces beach).

Living in WA the South West blow up the sand a fare bit.

The car was garaged the whole time.

After 18months I moved to with in 50m of a very windy section of beach.

The car was garaged again but nothing could be done to stop the very fine gains of salty sand getting in the garage.

The car would covered with an effort to stop it but it would get under the cover in the vents, everywhere.

Car was there every night for two years.

So my point.

The car has practically leaved in a very salty environment for 4 years.

It's winter white the paint is thin/very thin under bonnet.

I only pulled the full plastic vents out that sit between windscreen and bonnet and inspected for rust yesterday.

I wish I had bothered to take photos now.

I very happy to find no rust any where.

The hinges where good around bonnet, seem on panel joins all look spot on!

I'm not sure if it the so called Electronic rust controller that's not meant to work or I've just been lucky.

Some how knowing how thin the paint is I don't feel luck is involved!

To back this up I was looking for an FG for my old boy in November.

Looked at quite a few FG's form 08 to 11 none came close to the condition.

The closest one was a winter white 2012 with 40,000 on the clock and was the one we brought.

Mate, probably others with differing stories but this is mine.

Cheers

It maybe a cost cut measure but my engine bay is spotless,I've pulled everything out of the engine bay that can be removed and gone over it with some of my led detail lights ( though metal halide lights are the best, even concourse paint will show faults under them, been a detailer for yrs) and found nothing.don't quite know what they've mixed with the black but it's definitely not just a base coat and it seems to be doing the job. I've used that wax spray on other cars and it's good stuff.
