Bf Mk2 Xr6 Turbo Upgrades

Hi all first post new member,

I have a september build 2006 BF MK2 XR6 Turbo that is bone stock apart from an earls oil turbo line and I would like to do some minor upgrades aimed at improving ecconomy, throttle response and marginal power increases hopefully at a reasonable cost. I was hoping for some input from people who have done something similar and their results.

I dont want a huge spend either $1500 would be about it as I would also like to put the aggressor kit, wheels and GT wing on it. I have all the means to install this stuff myself as my old man is very cluey and has built numerous s13s and I can probably get trade prices through various contacts and may even have a contact for a custom tuner.

Here is what I am looking at keeping in mind this is purely for use as a road car:

- $200 - F6 lower intake with K&N filter (I may be able to get a growler kit very cheap if so I will use that)

- $200 - 100 CPSI cat, I know about the o2 sensor, probably the Venom brand (are they good?) - I have the means to just buy the cat and weld it into the system (how much more benefit will I get from a full turbo back system, ive read that the factory system is decent and the cat is the biggest draw back)

- $300ish - F6 intercooler (2nd hand) hopefully taken off a newish wreck (I believe its a direct bolt in? is it? and I can use the original piping although I will probably upgrade the piping) are the no name brand intercoolers on ebay for $170 ish complete rubbish?

- $300 - Underdrive pulley kit (maybe... are they worth it? I can probs get a better price on the kit)

- Custom tune - What would I pay from a place like east coast customs or the like im in Brisbane - maybe put the boost up to 8 PSI just for a bit more fun, I think its 6psi from stock

Will doing the above garner me better ecconomy or at least the same ecconomy and more power if so how much roughly, as I said I dont wont huge power I just want it to be better than stock, what effect will these upgrades have on the torque?

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase.

Best thing you can do is speak to your prospective tuner. Call a few (there's some in QLD that advertise on this forum) and explain exactly what you want. Depending on your tuner's choice in software you might have to purchase an xcal flash tuner.

F6 CAI with a K&N filter, venom cat, fuel injectors, walbro intank pump and a tune is your best bet. Speak to your tuner about injectors as some prefer certain products.

F6 CAI you should be able to get for $100. It's just the snorkel that you need. You can cut out the hole in the front of the standard XR6T airbox to fit it. A K&N filter wouldn't be bad either.

The F6 intercooler doesn't flow a great deal more than the XR6T cooler. Your tuner may advise you not to bother with it.

You should see some better economy after a tune. The standard tune's AFRs are pretty rich.

Under drive pulley isn't something done on the turbos. Leave it for the N/As.

G'day Marshall,

I have a bf and didn't want to spend big so what I did was replaced centre muffler with hotdogs, k&n filter with 2 hole mod to air box and a tune by Mike (ratter). I've got 250rwks and absolutely love it, just to gice an idea. Troy

Welcome mate. If it was my $1500, I would buy a set of fingerprinted(flow matched) injectors and a very mild tune to suit to get what you are after. Controversial maybe, but as you say "response & economy" I'd do that.

(plus get some ag pipe, punch 2 holes in the air box & make your own FPV airbox)

thanks for the responses guys... 240 - 250 rwkw would be a perfect number for me... will the stock cooler support this? or would I be better off with an F6 cooler as my budget wont stretch to Plaz and Process... I dont really want to touch injectors ect...I am leaning toward F6 CAI, K&N, Venom Cat 100 cpsi and tune which will most likely be done by real Dyno performance at redcliffe (does anyone have any input about them?) and maybe F6 cooler if the stock one doesnt cut 250 rwkw... what thoughts can anyone give me about the above post... am I better off with a new cat or removing a muffler? Ive read all over the place that the stock exhaust is reasonable except for the cat.

Cheers

You should be able to hit 250rwkw with a tune only. From memory the injectors, cat, intercooler need replacing if you're after approx 270+rwkw. If you're gonna do any of the last 3 do them all at once for the best improvement.

Whats the going rate for a custom tune now days ?

I've had my BF XR6T for like 3 years and Just haven't bothered with the tune, its hard to justify the $1200+$600 for the box.

I know you get exceptional gains, but I've been down the road with LS1's years ago, paid $1200 for a tune only to see them being done for $400-500 a few years later.

Depending on state...price sounds about right.

Think tune can be $1000+ and the xcal 4 is $750-$850?

There is the cheaper option of sniper tune (no box)...but seems to be frowned upon around here? (Maybe no reputable tuner can use it or maybe the quality of tune is not as good?). I'm sure others will give better advice tomorrow ;)
