Who would install an oil pump on a short that has to be transported and risk it being damaged..

Didnt realise it was short only till he pointed it out.

This should be/should have been the first step

Before you spent a single cent.

You're seriously just buying random jigsaw pieces at the moment, without even having the cover pic that shows what the finished result looks like.

You really, really need to start working from the pointy end downwards - and you're not going to be able to find the pointy end on your own.

Instead of trying to gather all the bits together to hand off to the builder to finish you really should lock in the first.

You wouldn't take a shopping bag full of stuff you thought would taste good to a chef and tell them to cook you an awesome meal - you'd ask him give you a shopping list

You know the meal you want - but you're not a chef.

You know the main ingredients, but you don't know the spices, nor the cut of meat that makes the meal.

You come here for advice and suggestions and run with stuff that sounds like it will taste good and bypass the sour tasting hints. Sometimes a bit of lemon rind is the perfect ingredient.

Find your mentor - your chef - your engine builder.

Let them know what they have to work with and let them work out the recipe.

Don't end up with a camp stew made of leftovers and a hodge podge of scraps.

Fkn lol

when I originally was going to get a engine build ,some commented why bother a FG will do the same . so I go out buy a low mileage FG engine . then I find out it has some problems , which I can get fixed . then some say you should have got it build in the first place . WTF are you guys on , f*cking stick to one path when giving advise . just because I do not want to go to Tony you get your back up .

Relax mate you had more bad luck. As others have said its not actually that bad, and you got all the bolt on's and goodies at a good price. Its really not a fail. Youve done the right thing by contacting jamie about a builder. Jet066 wont be built by tbre this time I belive jamie has sourced another builder under some sort of sponsership deal. So relax he will point you in the right direction. Sell the ba donk complete it will go towards the fg rebuild. Reeeelaaaax maaan and stop taking the farkin internet so seriously. Edited by barnz

Well I just caught up, didn't start from the beginning but I get the drift..

check out my build thread when you get a chance, you will get abit of an insight on what's involved...

Keep in mind that machining is expensive aswell, so I'd say for the Pistons, rings, rods, bearings you mentioned allow ~$1500-$1700.. The machining will depend on how everything measures up, so worst case, hone, crank grind, deck the block, tunnel bore ~$1500... And $1000 for assembly is fair, considering all the washing, measuring, tools, knowledge and time involved, A full service of the head should be ~$600-$700 if reusing all your old gear

Then you need things like a gasket kit, timing kit, balancer, new head bolts...

Your budget of 17k should be more then enough to get it built...

Good luck mate

thanks , for that . starting to see that the machining is the most money involved part . but as I have said the crank and bore do not look as bad as I thought after taking the piston out . was even considering to just fit all new standard bearings rings etc my self and just get the bores honed and the block cleaned . get the machine shop to size up the bores and crank for the correct size bearings and then get it balanced . I would not mind fitting it all up my self ,just the oil splash plate is a pain fitted the same time the main studs get fitted which makes it hard to fit the rod bolts . was just taught to assemble the mains first and spin the crank after everyone I tighten to see for tight spots .

if I have to get it bored or crank machined I will get the ba engine done as it has all the correct engine mount brackets and oil dip stick holes

I just started reading this tread from the beginning. I got to the second page and choked on my breakfast! I totally had an immature bevis and butthead moment.

I do prefer multiple orifice spray though but that's a personal view I guess.

Yes I know what he meant but it was the way he said it.

How come you're rebuilding the engine completely now, did I miss something / you find a whole heap of damage? I thought it was just light scoring of the bores and the hardening on the rockers was starting to lift? I get that its disheartening when you sent those pics but something repaired properly isnt going to cause you issues. I would have dropped the sump and checked some of the mains if it was a concern, if all good and looks good get a wrecker motor like I suggested, grab the lifters and rockers out of that and get up and going with a set of bearings if it was actually needed and re-assemble it yourself. If the bottom end is fookukad why spend thousands and thousands when you could just buy a new short for under 3k?

As a friend it looks like you're in risk of sinking huge dollars and ending up (performance wise) with the original build you were going to do. I know people have told you this but your car is your car. You set your goals for your car, listen to what people have to say but you'll give yourself a stroke and a whole bunch of resentment to your car if you let everyone and everything change your mind back and forth. The original plan of fg engine/ dominello auto/ e85 sounded like a reall good one that would give you everything you were after, and a ute that if hooks would be into the 10s.

Maybe now is the time you need to stop and sit back and work out what you're after again...

If its still the 450ish rwkw dominello btr I think you're going down the wrong (unnecessarily expensive little extra power) path. Theres 2 cars ive seen making more than the power you're chasing on an fg na motor, and a handful of guys are doing close to it on ba engines which you already own. Was reading on here I think someone had a stock internal 750whp fg turbo engine that saw up to 800 at one point(?), and was sitll running like that for a couple of years later without issue.

If you're thinking about building a forgie for bigger power its wasted money now and if you want more power you'll need to go through your car again and change a lot of the supporting hardware from turbo and fuel system to gearbox and suspension/wheels & tyres. To that id say go with the cheaper one and be content with 450rwkw probably 10 second @ 130+mph sleeper that'll probably have issues hooking up on the highway with those tyres you run.

Mate I've read bits and pieces of the thread and the best thing you can do is delete it or ignore it.

Let Jamie do his job and take his advice. He's built the fastest and some of the toughest xrs in aus not to mention just about every make and brand available on aus roads, the crap ive read for the most part will just complicate matters for ya. If ya want it done right spend the money, take the time and make it happen. Too many opinions only make it worse rather than taking advice from the best.
