brake fluid and clutch fluid are both hydraulic fluids. You CAN use the same fluid for both.

Yes, they use the same stuff.

The clutch fluid is recommended to be changed whenever it is black/dirty or the clutch is feeling a bit spongy.

It's an absolute PITA to drain and bleed it without a remote bleed line, though, so most people just leave it until absolutely necessary.

Well I might get MT to price up a clutch fluid change and a remote bleed kit, then I can do it after that.

Is there any way to check the state of the fluid, without loosening the nipple to drain some fluid?

just how spongy the clutch is (comparatively to stock) and how dark/dirty/manky the clutch fluid reservoir is.
