I'm looking at possibly buying a classic car as a bit of a toy/weekender.

I'm not 100% sure the type of car, maybe and old mustang.

As my job allows me to have plenty of time off, I thought I might set up a business with the car doing weddings and the like.

Does anybody have any info they could help me with in regards to this?

I'm not out to make a living out of doing this, just a way of having a nice toy, maybe a few $$ and possible tax benefits.

Cheers.

sounds like a plan , and a great way to meat girls.

Just a few suggestions, some weddings will require more than one car

along a theme. Look for other" classics" to rope in as required.

Get your name out there. wedding associated businesses etc

That's true but if the car has the right look (color will play a big part), I think a single car could still be used, picking up Bride & Groom.

But have been thinking about two cars being a better option.

I wonder if say you had a mustang, joined a club or forum and contract other cars to help with larger bookings.

I had a friend years ago who did weddings in a classic Chev, he was part of a club and used other members

when needed. Funny thing he ended up with 2 and had them painted the same,

Got heaps of work IIRC .

BTW a few cars on here have done the odd wedding or two

You will have to change the rego ie to reflect "hire or reward" system. Think taxi's pay nearly 2k a year in rego's, obviously you wont be doing as many kays as a tacky, but RMS wont give 2 fcuks about that.....

And insurance to match. Id say you will also need to get a license similar to what a bus/taxi driver possesses.

Want it set up as a business so loss can be written off for tax.

Been told you need an F class license which qualifies you to take booked costumers only.

Yep, for WA you need an F class endorsement on your licence. Easy enough, it's just a form and some money (around $100). Pretty sure you'll need a medical check from a GP for that one as well. There will be info on www.transport.wa.gov.au somewhere.

For commercial use it will probably have to be licenced as a Small Charter Vehicle, which will also mean a pits inspection every 12 months.

Insurance is where it gets tricky. Have a chat with your current insurance company and see what they can do. Sure, you can try and do things with your current conventional insurance, but that's all gonna go bad if/when you make a claim. Possible fraud charges and court appearances for making a claim on personal car insurance when it was commercial use (Uber drivers will be finding out about that one).

My taxi costs $1,600 to licence and $3,500 to insure per year (with a $2,000 excess).

Call Dept of Transport on 1300 660 147 for some info, or go see them at 10 Brown Street, East Perth.
