Zf Holding Gears...

Hi guys, I have a strange issue(?) with my ZF. After coming out of a corner and accelerating to 50-60kmph it seems to hold 3rd gear and sit at about 3000+rpm after I let off the throttle, even if I take my foot of totally it still holds gear, I have to just tap/hold the pedal in lightly then it'll switch gear.

I've been reading up a little bit on this and have found that the ZF has a low tolerance to uneven/mismatched front tyres. Apparently this makes the gearbox think that the car is turning a corner. I dunno how true this is or how the ZF can even work this out, but I do have mismatched tyres on the front end (had a screw in one, it needed to be replaced asap, they didn't have the same tyre in stock). So I'm thinking this might be the cause.

Before I get rid of both the front tyres has anybody else come across this issue?

I've never read about it being worried about mismatched tyres! If your gunning it what's probably happening is its thinking your going to keep going and its leaving it in a lower gear waiting to go faster. In performance mode it's more obvious otherwise it may have learned you like to go hard.

Once you get to third she'll be so willing just to keep going, the fg xr6 turbo just wants to keep going and if you gas it up and then hold back it'll be left wanting.

That's my 2c anyway, I would t sorry unless your putting around then you might just to reset it by disconnecting the battery in case it's learnt some bad habits.

As bulletime said, giving it a bit of a flog makes it hold the gear, expecting another hit. Basically it thinks you're on a race track and about to enter another corner. When you touch throttle again it realises you're not and then allows an upshift.

Solution?

Manual mode

My gearbox was holding 3rd after some really heavy launches with the standard heat exchanger

Wouldn't shift into anything else.

Found out that's limp mode

Mine does it every now and then as well.....when just pottering around like an old bloke....and it doesnt matter if I try the normal things to get it to change, it won't.

If I notice it happening too much / to often, I'll connect up the xcal and re-tune it (coz my zf tuned) and that fixes it for a while.

I'm positive that this is a part of my fuel usage problems

Edit

I'll just explain a bit more

Some times I could be doing 70 80 or 90 and it sits in 3rd like I have it in manual mode

Ah good to know it's not just mine. I'll reset it disconnect the battery and hopefully it'll re-learn my habits.

It doesn't really happen when I'm flogging it, just normal acceleration not in performance mode. It's kinda weird because the first to second shift is ok but then in third it just keeps on revving. If I ever flog it I change gears myself.
