Yet another thread about the fg ute diff, I couldn't find a topic or anyone else that had the exact same issue.

I get a clunk/thud in the rear left, only when taking off in 1st. I can not replicate the clunk otherwise, if I take off using the clutch a little more I can stop the clunk.

I have read several threads about changing the diff oil. Is this the first thing I should try? I don't see how a different oil could stop some obvious movement, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong here!

I have no obvious diff whine either, I've listened out for it in different speed ranges, thought I heard something at the 80kmh mark but I think that was in my head, you know how you hear things only when you're trying to listen to something in particular?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Edit: I'll add, 2008 fg xr6t with 88,100 on the clock.

Oh really? I'll grab some oil and give it a change, guess it can't hurt. Thanks for the reply!

For diff oil, I use Penrite Pro Gear 80-140. Not cheap, but synthetic and heavy duty and doesn't require additional additives for LSDs.

Make sure that you are able to remove the fill bolt before draining the diff (in case the fill bolt won't come loose).

that's what I use as well ,its good sh*t mate . I have a true track locker with 3.9 gears ,so far no problems . still think the noise you are hearing is back lash ,the oil will help due to the thicker viscosity (but not that much )
