if it all works well in your friends laptop and not in yours its gotta be that the setup of the wireless card on the laptop is incorrect, eg, gotta make sure u've set the network to connect to a router networking setup and not ad/hoc. It's hard to find a solution without actually tinkering with it.

I think I have isolated the problem. It seem to be that the anything but the software supplied by the company will not work with the wireless card. So I am putting it down to compatibility issue.

The card has a 100% strength signal and is connected to the router. Just not able to send or receive data.

Software?? I dont see why you would need to run specific software to make a wireless NIC work.. What make/model is it?

when I say software, I mean programs, such as internet explorer and Windows. I know Windows 98 does not support wireless protocal.

Edit - I have just realise I should update my windows with serice pack since I reinstalled it. will report once I done that

How are you configuring your TCP/IP layer ?...Is it configured to use a DHCP server to obtain an IP address, or are you hardcoding the IP ?.

Depending on the rest of your config, you may need to set the default gateway to be the IP address of your router.

I have installed Netgear, both router and PC card with no issues - admittedly this is on XP, but 98 shouldn't be any different, as long as the drivers are supported.

Personally, one fundamental issue is that you are running Microsoft - guaranteed not to work, 100% of the time....What you really need is an true operating system like Linux. :lol:

whatever - do u have msn...I'll help u setup a wireless link....its not that hard.

the first thing u need ot do is get teh basic tihngs working - such as sharing a folder on the PC and getting the lappy to see that - make sure your on teh sane workgroup and u've got the ip domain set as 192.168.0.1 on the desktop pc...which I'm gueessing is the one with the net....and then set the lappy's IP as 192.168.0.<numebr between 2 and 255)....if u use the windows network setup wizard...it should do it all for u.....if u want a blow by blow rundown I'll write it all up 4 ya and post screen shots.....but not right now......got teh adeliade T cruise!! byeeeeee!!

I have an ADSL Modem/Router and have a combination of PCs and Laptops (and even a PS2 with an internet hub) with XP and different versions of Win 98.

To get it all working I first setup the XP machine using the wizard. This then asks you if you have any non XP computers you want to add to the network. When you answer Yes it will create an application called netsetup.exe on a floppy. Take this floppy and use it in the other PCs. It installs some components and basically runs the XP wizard. It has worked every time for me.

This may solve the problem, if it is not purely a wireless related issue.

I have just spoke to Australian tech support. He told me that they have had problems with using PC card and windows 98. They have not been able to pin point where the problem is. It reckon its got something to do with the my laptop.

I have tired both using DHCP and hardcoding, DHCP doesn't work at all. hardcoding will get a connection but not able to ping the router. I reckon it must be a driver or software compatiability issue. I give up, I just have to live with cat5 cable for now.

I have also setup a home network using XP as the router and connect Windows 98 to it, but it is not wireless.

Ok a few pointers -

If your router is 192.168.0.1 and DHCP isnt working hard code your lappy to say 192.168.0.2 and desktop to 192.168.0.3

Forget about internet for now. Just check you can now ping both the desktop and the router.

Share a folder on both the lappy and desktop and see if you can see each PC and shared folder in network Neighberhood. If you cant your prolly running on different workgroup names, XP Home is a bit@h it will default to MSHOME and 98 will default to Workgroup.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT when you boot up the laptop if networking is setup ok you should get a username password box DO NOT press cancel or hit escape, youll get into windows if you do but wont be able to access nothing or ping other addresses you must log in ANY username and password will do 98 doesnt care.

And under networks / tcp/ip setting use 192.168.0.1 as gateway address and DNS.

Then try opening a command window and if you can ping 192.168.0.1 cool, now try pinging say www.bigpond.com

If you get back an error host name unkown or similar DNS is not working try ping 144.135.18.32

If this works you do have net access but DNS resolution not working.
