I got my desktop connect to the router via network cable. everything is fine there. The problem I am having is when I try to connect my laptop via wireless pc card, I can't get the internet to work. It seem to me that I could get a connection between the laptop and the router, but just can't get the internet to work. I also try to access the router by typing in the IP address of the router in the address bar. No success either.I have set my internet connection for the laptop the same as the desktop to "automatic configuration". Every setting is same between the two apart from the laptop I assigned an IP address to it, otherwise I was getting weird IP address.Any tips?thanks in advanceI have no idea about computers at all.EDIT: now my outlook express doesn't work either. I think I will need to type in a new mail server. Do I just put my router's IP address there?By the way I am with telstra cable. I can only connect both computers to the net via a crossover network cable. I think the reason that my laptop can't connect to the internet is because the Router has its own IP address (which is not connecting directly to the net as I use 56k). The laptop is trying to connect to the internet through the router and not the Desktop. If there is a way to connect all the computers on a network using a wireless adsl router... I would love to know.BTW, I connect using a 56k modem on my desktop because ADSL is not available in my suburb yet.
whatever Member 76 Member For: 21y 5m 1d Location: Brisbane Posted 08/02/04 02:40 AM Author Share Posted 08/02/04 02:40 AM I have got the 192.168.0.1 set as the IP address for the router. The laptop is trying to connect to the router instead of the desktop. I got the feeling it something to do with transmitting of the data. When I try to ping the router most of the time it just timed out. Sometimes I will receive one packet.I am running out of ideas. whatever Member 76 Member For: 21y 5m 1d Location: Brisbane Posted 08/02/04 06:17 AM Author Share Posted 08/02/04 06:17 AM (edited) an updateSort out the outlook express problem. All I had to do is type in the mail server's full address.I went to the extreme and formated the hardrive. Reinstalled the wireless network card. same problem, no ping.I hook the laptop up using network cable, it worked like a charm.I also tried the same wireless card on my friend's XP laptop. no problem at all, worked like a charm. So I think its going to either the laptop is running some sort of firewall/block that I don't know about. I am getting packets back from pinging, therefore this shouldn't apply.or maybe problems with TCP stack config(this one is beyond me)?thanks richdave, I am currently looking through the site. might try pinging from both side to see if that works.By the way I don't think I have mentioned my system. I am running Windows 98 second edition. Edited 08/02/04 06:21 AM by whatever

I am running Windows 98 second edition.is it possible that the card is not supported by 98SE? Are you using the correct driver? did you get a disk with the card. Does the wireless card appear to be OK when you look in the system hardware, device manager under control panel? I expect the lan card should show up under network adaptors and if you right click on the adaptor and select properties, you will see if the system thinks it is working properly or not. If it has a yellow ? next to it then the system does not think the device is installed correctly - right click and delete it and reboot so it can be re detected. You can also update the driver there so perhaps try another driver. Have you tried doing a update on the microsoft site and seeing if there any microsoft drivers available for the card.keep us posted...no pun intended...  Edited 08/02/04 08:51 AM by richdave

And system restore acutally works too...it has saved by a$$ a couple of times
whatever Member 76 Member For: 21y 5m 1d Location: Brisbane Posted 08/02/04 10:07 AM Author Share Posted 08/02/04 10:07 AM as far as I can tell, the PC card seem to be working fine. I used the driver supplied in the box. I am not too sure if my laptop can handle XP. Not enough resource.I will call the Australian tech support tomorrow. Call the tech support and got divered to USA and it was basically someone going through the manual with me.
