Hi bjc,

Personally I have not done any tuning at all. I purchased HP tuner with the intention of learning. I am fortunate to have a friend who used to tune full time, so I will be picking him knowledge base. The car will be tuned by Dave Sheehy at CPV in Mackay, using the SCT software. Personally I believe that using a dyno is the best option, as there is a greater chance of obtaining accurate data as it is in a relatively controlled enviroment and data recording would be more accurate and repeatable. Road logging and tuning has its merits when it comes to light throttle applications.

Besides, I don't think the boys in blue would like anyone doing 4th gear power runs on any public roads. ....

I relation to the plenums, I have not seen seen any back to back testing. The standatd plenums seem to be fine up to around 500 rwkw. Changing the upper half does decrease the piping length and eliminates some sharp turns, but the bottleneck and air turbulence (Standard plenum runners) remain. So in essence, these can be problematic for those chasing bigger power and increases in efficiency can be made by changing to a Hypertune or Plazmaman billet type manifolds.

Plenums like the Hypertune and the Plazmaman have a tuned length runners, which depending on length, determines where their power range/band will be. These plenums as expertly engineered to maximise flow and air speed to the cylinder ports with the last amount of turbulence and restriction. These plenums have dead straight runners, which allows for mauve air speeds, wick is what you want. Porting the head also assists this am slow you to create a choke point, to slow the air and allow it to turn and go into the cylinder will the least turbulence. This is why the most porting of the head is done to the floor and not the roof.. It is a very complicated topic and hard to explain. I hope that this helps you...

Dave's the best mate and it's who I've been recommending since he started the tuning for money path as I met him by chance back in 2005 when I he was selling a PWR IC and he dropped in at my place here in Townsville to have a sticky beak at the TSI piggyback I had fitted as he was using? (not a unichip!) and doing his own tuning and racing back then (12.5 113mph). I knew back then he was a top bloke and just really friendly... Good to see he is where he's at now.

Dave doesn't know me from a bar of soap. But, he spent an hour with me on the phone, discussing my setup and gave me a lot of advice on how to have the car ready for him. He is a very smart man, and I admire his honesty and candor. No sugar coating or bullsh*t. I can't wait for him to weave his magic

Well, I managed to get a bit done on the car today. The fuel system is now almost complete. I now only have to mount the regulator and fit the lines. The turbo oil feed line is complete, except the fitting on the turbo.

The Turbosmart "Big Bubba" blow off valve arrived today, so fabrication of the plumbback piping will commence on Monday.

We had a few problems with the Plazmaman plenum. It wasmanufactured without the facility for the MAP sensor. So Plazmaman have made me a 25 mm billet spacer that will be installed between the plenum flange and the throttle body. Today, I was informed that it was in transit, so the remaining cold side piping will be finished next week. Due to the length of the plenum around No.1 cylinder, we had a fitment problem with the factory metal heater line that runs from the thermostat housing and down the left bank of the engine. The line fouled where the line slopes upwards towards the thermostat, so we decided to cut the line and insert a section of flexible hose. To do this, we milled the thermostat housing to give us a flat surface. We then tapped the housing and inserted a o'ringed Speedflow fitting. We then cut the metal heater line near the front support bracket and welded on in a -10 fitting (Pics on Monday). We will install the flexible on Monday.

The milled and tapped thermostst housing.

As most would know, the power steering lines in these car tend to leak and make quite a mess. We weren't happy with setup and the amount of room that the pressure line and switch get in the way of the turbo intake. So we have made a few changes... The port for the suction line has been tapped and a fitting installed. We decided to drill and tap the pressure side also. As you can see in the picture, we have fitted a -10 an blank. We are going to drill the center out of the blank, tap it and install a banjo fitting. This will allow us to reroute the line and pressure sensor well out of the way of the turbo intake, and allow us to achieve a better angle with inlet pipe. I will upload more pics when the process is completed.

All in all, it feels like we're achieving the proverbial "two steps froward, one step back", and we are constantly finding more areas that require additional modifications. At times, it is overwhelming, and my patience has been tested on a few occasions. I am fortunate to have a good group of people around me, for guidance and to fabricate and modify components. Without them, the quality of the would have certainly suffered.

The Drive Shaft Shop 1400hp drive shafts arrived today. The picture really doesn't show how big these things really are.

With any luck, I will have the new IRS and fuel system fitted before the car gets its engine bay painted on Sunday.
