Posted 07/02/04 06:44 AM Share Posted 07/02/04 06:44 AM OK after reading all the debate on the manual T5 transmission in the Turbo, I thought it would be interesting to see who actually has what, if any problems with this box. Guys after voting please post how many K's you've done and how hard you drive the car ( 1 being like KEN, 10 being like CRO  ). Lets see once and for all how bad this T5 is according to the drivers, not the mechanics! :banghead:

After 14,500km it feels better than it did in the first 1000km or so. In terms of driving habits I do drive it pretty hard. Always seem to give full throttle or thereabouts on take offs. Certainly using the gogs properly I'd maybe be a 7 or 8 in terms of "how hard I drive". TC always flicks on around corners I do nurse the clutch a little when trying a quick takeoff as apposed to dropping the thing. I hate the diff clunk :(Anyways, Only complaints. 2-3 is a sh*t change most of the time. 5-3 is practically non existent. But this is typical of the T5. Other than that I'm pretty happy with it

It's about what happens to the T5 when you hit it with over 6500N-7500N of torque over a rev band of 2-3k revs.Really the poll is relevant only to Stage 3 users.I suggest you bury this poll now, and bring it back in 12 months time, when we can do a proper poll, with a proper sample of users.Polling the forum when no-one besides myself (that I know of) is running these torque levels is a complete waste of time, and not relevant to the discussion.Brian

I'm really torn as to what to get now... I was all set on the manual.. and the sales manager from Denmac ford said nah.. ya gotta atleast take it for a spin before you decide... and I did and I was thoroughly impressed!!!!!!!and with the inevitable T56 coming in series II I dunno why I'd want to try the T5, T standing for Truck hehehe

WHAT ISSUE?Who said this poll was for stage 3 cars only?I did this to get an idea of how EVERYONE who drives one, feels about the T5, from dead stock cars to guys like you who have heavily modded cars. This poll is to get everyone's INDIVIDUAL opinions, so we can see what those that drive the cars actually think, instead of hearing all the technical data as to why or why not the box is or isn't suitable for a T in whatever application. If you wish to post what you feel about the box in relation to your car, we will all read with interest, but let everyone else have their opinion posted and read also! I've had it in four vehicles and it has travelled over 1,000,000 km with just one rebuild. The last five or so years it has been coping with heaps more torque than it was ever designed to do and is holding together just fine. However I do not drop the clutch on take-offs and am fairly gentle in my use of the shifter. That's not to say I pussyfoot about but I don't abuse the thing. The shift quality is the best of anything I have ever driven. Anyone who drives it cannot believe it isn't some kind of Jap box because the shift is so light - and not at all notchy like the T5s you guys have. If someone else decides to post a thread about the existing gearbox including a poll then why do you have to dictate the terms in regards to your special needs? Really, this poll is relevant to those with a T5 as 100%'s first post indicated. You're not relevant here, so rather than bury the poll, why don't you post elsewhere on what people's experiences are with a T56 upgrade? But as far as the T5 goes, my experiences have been good. My first T5 survived 292,000 k's without a rebuild and was the best part of the car went it left my hands. My current T5 has been modified with a short-throw SureShift shifter from Herrod Motorsport, and a short shifter shaft from Battens Performance Tuning. The old 2nd to 3rd shift problems are all but gone. I can confidently shift in anger, and do 2nd to 4th, 4th-5th, 5th-to any other gear, etc without any dramas. The position of the gearknob thanks to the shorter shaft is also a big improvement and it feels 100% more comfortable.Slotting into reverse is perhaps the only issue I still have with the gearbox. However, I find if I take it easy, slot into 5th then reverse it's ok. Edited 07/02/04 09:07 AM by Venom XR
