Some mechanics have a tool that blows smoke into the inlet manifold to look for leaks. I've heard of back-yarders using a small LPG bottle and hose to blow gas around manifold joints and hoses. If the engine speeds up, it's sucking gas at that point therefore there's a leak. I've never tried it so I can't guarantee you won't light the gas. Ignition sources under the bonnet? Not too many cars with distributor rotor buttons these days.
