Just noticed a very small amount of white smoke on startup at idle for maybe 30 seconds, burns up as soon as you take off. I'm not sure if it has always done it or is new.

What are the likely culprits, valve stem or turbo seals? Anyway to check?

Car has 190,000 kms on it. Bf xr6 turbo.

In fairness I have had a lot of work done in a short period of time and also driven the car very hard in that time which is a great way to discover things that were on the edge of being broken or are broken.

Anyway what would you suggest I check in case this is something more serious? There is no oil being used and coolant still looks great so I'm not worried about head gasket or pistons however I would like to make sure something like that doesn't happen. Today was literally the only time I've seen the smoke so I will check first thing tomorrow and see if it happens again.

It was warm when I started it and it smoked so I tried a few times today after it sitting for 2 hours and 4 hours and zero smoke not even a whiff. All I can think is a leaf blew into the muffler or something as it didn't really smell like oil smoke.

Bizarre.

I remember my mate had a 2.6L astron magna that would randomly fill the street with smoke, then it would be smoke free for 6 months, like a valve stem would completely collapse and then fix itself magically.

Well it still isn't making any smoke so my conclusion is a leaf blew into the muffler.

edit: Grey smoke is under fueling??? Surely running lean would mean a 100% burn and hence a very clean (carbon wise) exhaust gas?

It's a general rule to get a starting point to what is actually wrong with a vehicle, we're talking very lean fuel mixtures here, more related to diesel or carbi engines, EFI engines would probably go to limp mode or be running like a bucket of sh*te (engine light on also) before grey smoke appeared out the tailpipes, or have a mad fuel leak
