I do know my engine mounts are pretty average as the whole car rocks when I rev the engine and the bonnet shakes when I start it, however this all happened before the knocking noise. Is having shagged engine mounts likely to cause any issues other than increased NVH?

I'll get the centre bearing done with the diff bushes next week, if it is something else I'll get them to do that as well. Car has 190,000 on it so not surprised, pretty much every other bush and bearing has been replaced on it already.

Went to get it and the diff bushes replaced, they said the centre bearing was fine and the diff bush was completely f*cked and that was the cause. Drive the car home and find it still makes the noise just not as bad. The rear end is definitely better now but annoyed I have to take it back again.

that's because numpkins "think" it looks ok but its not

Visual inspection can catch out some people

Push up on the tailshaft by the CB and it should only flex the rubber coupling a tiny bit, if u get +10mm on it shes no good and that's what thumps under load but only at certin speeds

Yeah its really mild now because the diff doesn't move any more but it is still knackered. I'll take it to a local mechanic, sick of driving that far.

Cheers

Had two workshops look at this and give up. Diff bushes are new, centre bearing has zero play. They tightened up a bunch of loose stuff (subframe bolts and vibration shield) which didn't fix it. Suggested it could be driveshaft/tailshaft bearings but they didn't want to start replacing stuff hoping it would fix it in case it wasn't the problem. Said it might be best just waiting for it to get worse until it becomes obvious what it is. They didn't charge me as they couldn't figure it out.
