My question is, can a worn out odometer somehow stop ticking over? What would the possible failure points be? Has anyone seen this before?

You skipped a job.. Claimed to attended site and really billed a client for nothing because they turned it off and turned it back on and it sorted itself out..

I assume it picks up distance by rotation of the wheels and a sensor going past each time, but can the sensor be blocked at all? Or is it a mechanical cog? I recall seeing teeth inside there and the magnetic ABS sensor cog thing, is that it?

Most spedo/odometer pickups are in the box, I'd say it would be a hall effect sensor of some sort..

Ive always wondered, those cars you see getting towed by caravans or whatever, with all 4 wheels on the ground when, does the odometer still count with the ignition off??? Or if you disconnect the battery will that stop it counting??

I done a test where I turned the ignition off in my work ute while rolling, then turned it back on and the odometer still counted (2011 Navara, so obviously electronic odometer)

My BF2 uses a rear wheel ABS sensor for speed, don't know which side.

If you pull ABS fuse under dash you get a lot of lights and no speed, but also gets upset and limp modes and rev cuts randomly and violently.

If you pull the ABS No2 fuse from engine bay yet again lots of lights and no speed but it doesn't randomly rev cut and will allow it to rev out normally.

I found this out at the track when I was having issue with ABS coming in with hot brakes when barely touching the pedal which was a bit hairy trying to slow up for a fast corner with almost no braking ability. Once ABS was out the picture I could brake hard and late into the corner.

I'd be confident in saying that the speed sensor would have to be on the output shaft of the gearbox, it measures pulses and calculates the speed using diff ratio and tyre circumference... That's why if you change your diff gears your speedo will be out
