Because the Barra is known to have harmonics due to its 10 foot long crankshaft (give or take a foot or three) and long stroke, if the 'cells' are not sweated together perfectly the transmitted vibration from the engine causes an internal rupture..

If the problem involves vibrations from the engine, would a different mounting system (to isolate the vibrations) be a good idea for those with the standard cooler?

Replaced mine with another new stock unit at 101,000km... Not sure if the unit taken off had been replaced before but didn't look too bad on the outside.

What do they hit you for a new exchanger?

all up tranny service with LG6 oil, exchanger and fixing a little oil leak was $1050.

not sure exactly how much the exchanger was

My Original one did 120,000kms and it started leaking on the outside only, few drops of coolant on the garage floor I found. Replaced with new factory item. Has less than 5,000 on new one.

depending on exchanger price but we could have done that for possibly less than $800 assuming the oil leak was from the wiring sleeve

unfortunately ratter your in frankston, I'm in the northern suburbs.

and it was timing cover that was leaking

I changed mine when the FG was 3yrs old and now 2yrs later gonna change again.

We have two E39 5 series BMWs and both run a similar setup but don't really hear about the BMW coolers failing. Maybe cause they are made in Germany I would think.

Nevertheless came across these. Are they made any better??
