Loading Tune Files With 2Nd Battery Assistance

I have a fgxr6t that is used on the circuit with an old pc680 dry cell battery. The battery still works fine as is regularly maintained via a ctek trickle charger. As changing tune files at the track (via the sct xcal device into the obd II port) takes a lot of battery drain, here is my "long winded" question.

Can I connect a 2nd battery to the incar dry cell battery terminals via a red/black jump starter lead to provide extra current while the tune file is downloaded? Thanks.

I would not go to that extent honestly as the flashing process is fragile enough, just add the c tek to your battery and flash away when u can

Have you ever tried an external source jet? I have a decent power supply I use for work emergencies, adjustable voltage, 15 or 20amp I think. I have a habit of sending my car flat stuffing around with obd stuff. Cant see why It wouldn't work, just haven't tried. Obviously trying to start the car would be full retard...

The battery I'm using Odyssey PC680 is OK but not perfect. Discharged once fully when a tune downloading froze on me (and battery was never 100% after that) and I don't want it to happen again.

Numerous people have told me the tune file download via OBDII takes a significant amount of battery charge.

Seen tuners even cool the SCT device unit during connection to make sure it doesn't overheat and affect the download.

Why do you feel the flashing process takes a lot of battery drain?

Yeh that's true and many times we had to stick the x3's into the fridge to "cool" down as they are temperamental as fook

We always had a ctek hooked up throughout the tuning/flashing process as the car was on the dyno anyway but only to keep the main battery tip top but that being said we would be flashing tunes in at a massive rate sometimes followed by starting the car, its not the "flashing" process that humps the battery more the cranking of the starter

Ive sent a battery flat in like 20mins requesting pids. I have a feeling that's due to keeping all the modules "awake" but I don't know for sure. All I know is I can have my stereo on for like an hr and its fine.

In essence there is no issue a battery/ies to boost the voltage. HPT recommend using a battery over a charger due the fluctuations in the voltage from the ac->dc rectification going on in the charger.

The reason the X-cals get hot (and the HPT MVPI warm and the cheap arse chinese VCM flashers burnout) is because the PCM requires 18v to the EFPR pin to initiate flashing.

If your battery voltage is low the current required by the step up circuit goes through the roof (hence the heat) as the heat increase resistance goes up require more current to achieve the same output voltage and obviously this puts more load on your battery.

Nelson, your battery is doing the classic gel cell float charge only symptoms. If you able to high rate recharge the battery as per the directions in the this link

You should be able push the battery through the float charge state and into the deep cycle portion of it capacity.

I've mentioned it before but the charging systems in out car (especially BF onwards) are not capable or fully charging a gel cell battery they are able to maintain a healthy battery but that's about it.

It's a common misconception that deep cycle batteries are better then lead acid. They are able recover from a flat condition better and are able to retain a charge (with no load) for longer but they are not as good at supporting low parasitic loads for long periods of time.

It probably goes without saying but make sure every possible additional electrical load is turned off when charging

Ie interior light is only a 5w globe right? Yeah but it keeps the BEM active to have it switched on.
