They can be quite loud depending on what oil is in them. Mines noticeably louder when warm.

The gearbox is fine and used in many different applications around the world. Not many manual boxes can cope with the type of power we put through them. The stock manual gearstick shaft has a hardened rubber coupling block at the base which bolts on to the gearbox shaft. This is ford crap, and just transmits all the noise from the gearbox. It is very poor at isolating noise. Put a piece of rubber 5-8mm (couple of bucks from Clarke rubber) between the gearbox shaft and the gearstick shaft coupling block and you will eliminate all the noise. Even better, replace the whole gearstick and knob and put some rubber in - it will feel like a new gearbox.I actually loosened the coupling bolts a little allowing a bit of play. This gives a much better shift quality, no longer stiff and notchy.
