Hey guys,

got an odd rattle coming from my gearbox when the car idles and clutch is out, any thoughts/suggestions what it might be?

Sounds like normal roll over noise these boxes make. They can be quite loud depending on what oil is in them. Mines noticeably louder when warm.

The problem is the crap parts ford Oz use throughout the car. The gearbox is fine and used in many different applications around the world. Not many manual boxes can cope with the type of power we put through them.

The stock manual gearstick shaft has a hardened rubber coupling block at the base which bolts on to the gearbox shaft. This is ford crap, and just transmits all the noise from the gearbox. It is very poor at isolating noise. Put a piece of rubber 5-8mm (couple of bucks from Clarke rubber) between the gearbox shaft and the gearstick shaft coupling block and you will eliminate all the noise. Even better, replace the whole gearstick and knob and put some rubber in - it will feel like a new gearbox.

I actually loosened the coupling bolts a little allowing a bit of play. This gives a much better shift quality, no longer stiff and notchy.

My rattle sounds like typical input shaft bearing noise from a very old box, is this the sound you guys are talking about? 6 speed BF with 185,000 on it.

Ok good that is relieving, I've blown up a few skyline boxes before and when the input shaft bearing goes (ALWAYS f*ckING GOES!!!) it sounds like marbles and gravel being flicked around in the box, similar noise the XR6 box makes though it is not as loud.
