What sort of ring gap do these engines like with 25+psi boost?

The spec'ed ring gap in the manual seemed quite small last time I checked, esp for a turbo. But it seems that the factory is running 14 thou on the top ring from memory and no bore scuff reported with it.

However I rebuilt a E series drift engine (not my original build and just as a favour) which scuffed a few bores and the gap was around 16 thou. So when I rebuilt it I think I went around 20 or 22thou top and 22 or 24 thou bottom (cant remember exact). Being a drift engine I made it quite loose. And the engine gets heaps from the owner and runs very clean under high load. Nothing wrong with slightly wider ring gaps and the line of thought for the last decade is wider bottom ring gap than top ring gap.

You will never loose an engine running a little loose but you will running a little tight.

Make sure when you dismantle the engine you check ring gaps that the manufacturer used. Yes the gaps will be wider than the 14thou in the book but will give you an indication where you don't need to go past.

Exactly what I was thinking. My engine builder recommended at least a 20 thou gap while the manual was much less. Went with the bigger gap and with e85 it comes pretty early as is.

Are you going bigger turbo down the track???

Not sure why you'd want to build the motor just to max the standard turbo.

Gtx35/82 should see me into the 500rwkw mark? but a turbo upgrade will come later on Id say

Thanks for the info guys, I remember setting my old EB to around the 22thou and that used to breath quite heavy.. I'm going to put some info into an engine analyser program and try some different combos
