is there any benefit in one over the other, do both do full real time tuning? If so other than the hand controller why would you get one over the other, do they both have similar capabilities? How do they connect to the ECU, do they use a standard connection? Is there anything the hand controller is useful for other than switching between multiple tunes?

If you have actually used the software I'm curious what your thoughts are.

Any screencaps of the software I'd be interested in as well.

Neither is capable of realtime tuning as the pcm doesn't support it.

Your essentially asking about two very different products. Unless you have a shop front and dyno you won't be able to purchase the SCT tuning software so if you wish to tune your own car it counts out sct. However if your afternoon a set and forget approach (and require multiple tunes) a reputable tuner using sct is a worthwhile option.

Both systems flash the pcm via the obd2 port.

Re screen caps, hpt have a demo version you can download from hptuners.com. I doubt you find too many professional workshops who'll throw up advantage 3 screen shots.

What car are you intending to tune?

Also the handheld unit is useful for data logging if you tune your own car. Most of us backyarders who tune with HPT generally log with an xcal as the hpt scanner is lagging behind sct. Hpt are promising a major update that should help bridge the gap.

BF XR6T that has already been tuned via HPT, I will check out the demo version, that sounds like a great way to trial the software.

How bad is the HPT data logging, does it allow you to log, graph and replay whatever values you are interested in?

Unfortunate that the PCM does not allow real time tuning, even the 1980s ECUs in nissan skylines are capable of real time tuning with a daughterboard installed in them,

Thanks for the information.

The loggable parameters are limited in the hpt scanner. Ford use DMRs for non obd2 compliance parameters. In short if ford weren't required to broadcast it they didn't. The scanner needs to have individual parameters mapped to log. Sct can do this, at the moment hpt cannot.

Live tuning is neither here nor there imho. The PCM just requires a different approach and methodology to tune it.

^Does that equal 6?..... or is that in the "not so helpful pile?"

HP are carrying out a major software update as we speak, I'm told it will be one big step towards sorting the scanner out.
