All,

this has been discussed, but I wasn't sure on the conclusion...

discussion

here's my prob in a nut shell...

got 18" alloys, 18" spare.

I need to use my spare whilst I get my rear left fixed (don't ask)

I whipped the damaged rim off to replace it with the spare momentarily, to find the tyre is on the wheel the wrong way around...I compared the tread and it is the opposite to what it should be.

So...

can I leave the spare on the vehicle with the tyre 'around the wrong way' whilst the proper one gets fixed? Is this dangerous? Should I have the spare tyre flipped then use it for the interim? Is this only dangerous in the wet due to the water being channeled inwards?

any advice would be very much appreciated.

Chris

Just take it easy mate, you'll be fine the way it is.

Unless you are setting land speed records you won't notice the difference.

thanks Matt,

I was doing some research in google groups, and the main point they were making was that it only gets dangerous in the wet at relatively high speeds.

cheers

this does raise a question though, why put a directional tyre on the spare 18" alloy?

Who is to say which side of the vehicle you may get a flat on?

I gather this is due to Ford assuming you will only have it on for a short period of time.

eh!

The directional spare tyre is supposed to be on the rim right way round for the left, wrong way round for the right (because flat tyres on the left are more common). But having the directional tyre on wrong way round shouldn't make much difference except in the wet.

I would assume that Ford fit a directional tyre simply because it is easier for them to use the same tyre that is fitted to the other wheels.

I don't think you can get non directional low profile 18" tyres. I looked when I got mine and Bobe Jane just said that is the way it is. Do go stupid and you will be right. If you are leaving it on there for a while, $15 bucks at any tyre place and 10mins of your time will fix the problem....

You can get non directional tyres in this size. A quick search on the Dunlop website reveals the SP SPORT 2000E and the LE MANS LM 702. I'm sure other brands would also have non directional tyres in this size.
