So you pay a tuner for his years of experience to tune your car with SCT.

You suck the tune out with HP and make some improvements to cold starts and idle etc

Now that you have made these changes you start to play with other stuff and you think a few more deg of timing down low may be better or a few more psi of boost

Engine goes bang, what do you do???

No problem, just whack your old SCT file in and go straight back to your tuner and ask him to explain what happened.

This is why tuners lock there tunes, to protect themselves in some way

It's just very unfortunate that HP are able to read the SCT files.

Sure red nose that may happen

But you can't use the idiots of the world to validate things you can and cannot do

I'm a darwinist, if the fool leaves the safety of his gun off while cleaning the barrel and kills himself is it his fault or the manufacturers fault?

Do these pcms have a counter of some arrangent? Like a permanent dtc that keeps a count of flashes? I muck around with android hacking a fair bit and a few smart phones have them

Point is there must be some way for tuners to protect themselves, if people want to change their tunes or load their tune into a mates car via hp and it goes bang that's their problem. Then they will be going to ratter to spend the $$$$$$ ;-)

Just saying, if I was a tuner I would lock my tunes as it would protect my business and the fools.

Win Win !!!

That's true

And to be honest I'd consider it too

But for people like me who live a fair distance away from my tuner it would be incredibly handy to play with my zf tune a little.

Idiots are going to be idiots and

blow their cars up regardless of the tune being locked

And yes I've been told that it does have a counter I could be wrong though

Pretty sure the Ford Diagnostics can see how many times the unit's been flashed - pretty much the reason flashing back the stock tune won't fool them into warranty work on a blown engine.

Not sure if it's visible from SCT or HP software though.

Then I suggest you speak to your tuner, if you are at least open with what you want to do then he may even be able to give you some advice on what you need to do.

Another option is for your tuner to send you a tune with the changes you require.

I have no problem talking with Joe about it

Or getting an email

But something like Zf tune is all about personal preference. It's not a set it and it's perfect. It takes time and a lot of trial and error

It's just not practical for me or the tuner
