With T56 etc kits starting at $8K+, has anyone considered upgrading the T5 rather swapping out the box?

The T5 is a very common transmission used in a large variety of cars for a number of years, and because of that various companies have developed components for use in racing (strack/strip) to beef up the T5.

Do a search, but the following links give you a general idea of what is available.

G-Force T5 5 Speed Gear Sets

Glebe Borg Warner T5 Dog Box Kit

The second URL is all the info I could find on this kit because the Glebe site appears to be out of action.

I'm not sure what local development on the T5 has occurred over the years but plenty has occurred overseas someone could exploit here.

If you check the prices on these sites you'll see that you're starting at US$3500 on the first site, and 2300 pounds for a dog box on the 2nd...... so you get no change out of $8k going down that path... plus you'll still need to upgrade the clutch.

You also need to define what your torque handing requirement is.

I doubt that an upgraded T5 will handle 700-800NM of torque, which is my requirement.

If you're sticking with a stage 2 type upgrade, then the T5 may cope for a while, unless of course you abuse it.

There may well be someone locally who has done it, but I don't know of anyone. I'm going to get the T-56 installed in 2 weeks time.

Good luck,

Brian

Obviously your requirements are a lot different and thus wouldn't apply to you, I'm not sure how many members are planning 700-800NM loads on the gearbox.

Perhaps you didn't understand the post though - I said upgrade, not purchase a compete gearbox. The dog box 'upgrade' kit is 1750 pounds, or $4k roughly AUD. That's 4 grand short of the T56 replacement to cover shipping, GST/import duty and a clutch easy.

The G-Force set is $1800 for the complete kit which is roughly $2.5k AUD, $5.5k cheaper again than a T56 replacement. Not sure where you got the $3500 figure from.

These are of course, just yet another potential option for those with various requirements and wallet sizes.

My requirement is Stage 3-4.

Why don't define your requirements:

1. budget

2. torque handing capability

3. drivability ..... I wouldn't destroy the smooth driving nature of the T by sticking a dog box in it; just as if you put say a 2400lb clamping pp in the car it's not so easy to drive.

That 1st web site mentions the G-Force gearbox set at US$1800 but does state the torque capability. The next stage is the CR version for US$2675, capable of handling 550HP, the next JT5 RC version at US$3675, capable of handling 600HP.

Have we determined that the T5 is crap yet? I haven't heard many guys, who only drive hard occasionally destroying these yet.

I know of some people, but they launch their cars at every green light.

Esky,

My T5 started to have problems from around 300rwks, whilst on the dyno; maybe it was a bad example, but it is possiblly a bent input shaft, and a loud whine in all gears, and tough shift. I'm well beyond that power level now.

One example doesn't necessarily mean that all others will suffer the same problem.... but some may.

I think the T5 will live better than expected for most owners that dont go animal with huge torque increases, as it is torque that is hard on the drive train not power. It is possible to increase the power output whilst keeping torque at sensible levels this avoids the need for a tougher gear box and higher clamp loading for the pressure plate. :banghead:

Spose it depends on how you treat it too....slam gears and drop clutches and it wont last as long even in a stocker

Peter, I think rainer was telling us a while back that your phase lll(??) had no dramas for quite a while with a manual box, although the clutch plate was swapped for a stronger one?

Rodderz, that's correct we have tested a number of clutch/pressure packages and to date the T5 trans has given excellent service, and its been put through its paces by at least 5 magazine road tests.

I am not saying that the trans is bullet proof, though it has surprised me to date how good the trans has been given the rough treatment/life its seen.

No doubt that the trans will be sufficient for most owners with low to mid spec performance upgrades as long as they treat the trans with a little respect. :innocent:
