Oil type is not the major cause of the cam lobe wear.

I don't think it's on the lobe, it looks like it's worn on the heel.

If the lobes good and the heel looks like that then something strange is happening!

It would be nice to see a pic of the lobe !

The whole section is called the lobe. The wear does appear to be on the heel ( base circle) which is the least loaded region. It will be a case hardening issue. I might be examining a set soon.

Ok besides Fords crappy case hardening, I still find it difficult to come to terms with it happening on the heel and not the lobe(sorry the nose).

So there is a bit of info I read a while back about synthetic oil and on the drive home from work tonight I had a think about it.

I'm just "sayin" so don't flame me for just putting my thoughts out there!

What if the roller is skidding on the heel where the only pressure on the roller is from the lifter preload as opposed to the nose where there is a lot more pressure from the valve spring.

Every time the roller skids it leaves a tiny bit of pickup(metal) on the lobe heel.

This pickup builds up until it is eventually ripped off by the skidding roller.

When this happens the pickup also peels off a bit of the case hardening and from there the wear process accelerates.

This skidding could be down to a synthetic oils lack of impurities which therefore gives the roller less grip on the lobe heel.

I use both mineral and synthetic (sometimes semi synthetic) depending on application. So I'm not an advocate of either!

Anyway just a thought!

Yeh can't see how oil type is the problem if it's changed frequently. I just wish arron could get his hands on a set of damaged cams so we could put this whole synthetic vs mineral thing to bed once and for all.

Once I get it repaired I'll send the cam to arronm if he's still interested in checking case hardness. Just don't know how long till I get it repaired. Should be within a couple of weeks, just need to find a cam.

Are fg n/a cams the same?

I've destroyed quiet a few "flat tappet cams" but the only time I've wiped out a "roller cam" has been due too the roller seizing or bearing collapsing .

I had problems with the flat tappet cams due to some oil company's removing or reducing the amount of zinc in their oils a few years ago.

I now notice that quiet a few oil company's advertise "extra zinc" on their products now!

It caused me (and others) a fair bit of grief !

Ford recommend the bare minimum. they want to keep servicing cost down as that's what a lot of people look at when buying a car, fleet in particular. 15000km service interval is too much in my opinion. Ford pushed it out to that as that's what all the other manufacturers were doing. Unfortunately the life span of a car is considered it's warranty these days. Fact is that synthetic oil is a superior lubricant. semi is cheaper and still satisfactory for the engine that's why it's chosen. Hell, the Ford 6 is that reliable it would probably run on canola oil and see out of the warranty period no worries
