The wear does appear to be on the heel ( base circle) which is the least loaded region. It will be a case hardening issue. "Captain Retard" Member 1,417 Member For: 10y 8m 9d Gender: Male Location: Shellharbour NSW Posted 02/08/14 08:29 AM Share Posted 02/08/14 08:29 AM Ok besides Fords crappy case hardening, I still find it difficult to come to terms with it happening on the heel and not the lobe(sorry the nose).So there is a bit of info I read a while back about synthetic oil and on the drive home from work tonight I had a think about it.I'm just "sayin" so don't flame me for just putting my thoughts out there!What if the roller is skidding on the heel where the only pressure on the roller is from the lifter preload as opposed to the nose where there is a lot more pressure from the valve spring.Every time the roller skids it leaves a tiny bit of pickup(metal) on the lobe heel.This pickup builds up until it is eventually ripped off by the skidding roller.When this happens the pickup also peels off a bit of the case hardening and from there the wear process accelerates.This skidding could be down to a synthetic oils lack of impurities which therefore gives the roller less grip on the lobe heel.I use both mineral and synthetic (sometimes semi synthetic) depending on application. "Captain Retard" Member 1,417 Member For: 10y 8m 9d Gender: Male Location: Shellharbour NSW Posted 02/08/14 09:00 AM Share Posted 02/08/14 09:00 AM I've destroyed quiet a few "flat tappet cams" but the only time I've wiped out a "roller cam" has been due too the roller seizing or bearing collapsing .I had problems with the flat tappet cams due to some oil company's removing or reducing the amount of zinc in their oils a few years ago.I now notice that quiet a few oil company's advertise "extra zinc" on their products now!It caused me (and others) a fair bit of grief ! Ford pushed it out to that as that's what all the other manufacturers were doing. Unfortunately the life span of a car is considered it's warranty these days. Fact is that synthetic oil is a superior lubricant. semi is cheaper and still satisfactory for the engine that's why it's chosen.
