$3500 Roadworthy?

Hey guys so I Just picked an BA Mk2 Xr6 Turbo (6pd Manual) - The car seemed really good other then it was pretty low in ride height, and had a chip in the windscreen. I realised when driving it that it had the all so familiar diff knock from the worn bushes. So taking it in to get a RWC today and the total sum is WAY to much for what I was expecting (can afford). The below is the list of Parts

- windscreen $220.00
- wiper inserts $12.00
- secure underside tray $5.00
- front lower ball joints x 2 $90.00
- tail shaft centre bearing $150.00
- tail shaft coupling $195.00
- diff pinion bush (superpro) $113.00
- diff support bushes x 2 (superpro) $215.00
- diff cover reseal $20.00
- diff oil (lsd) $30.00
- upper outer hyme joints x 2 $199.00
- rear bump stops x 2 (superpro) $80.00
- front spring spacers x 2 (superpro) $155.00
- rear spring spacers X 2 (superpro) $100.00
- rear shocks $260.00
- rear control blade bushes (superpro) $281.00
- wheel alignment $55
This totals to $2000 and the labour on this is $1500.
If anyone can assist I have a few questions
Does the pricing on parts seem fair? (especially super pro bushes?)
given the avg labour rate of $100ph (which is a guess) does 15 hours labour seem reasonable?
Would all the items above be required for roadworthy?
I have some mechanical knowledge and someone that can help me that knows what to do however would the bushes mentioned above need to be 'pressed' in or can they all be fitted in a regular home garage?
He has over $500 for shocks and spring spacers to bring it to legal height, Is anyone selling factory suspension that would suit the car for much less or is that unlikely ?
Finally if anyone knows somewhere in South East Melbourne that could do better on this or Help out with rwc extra please PM me.

Labour would prob only be around 10 hours if that. Dropping the diff cradle for bushes is like 3-4 hours, but can also do all the other rear end bushes at the same time so say 5 hours max. Front suspension an hour or 2. The odd couple of bits and pieces would add up but yea 10 max I would say.

All depends on how many kms. The bushes are all relatively common with higher kms, but the guy could be ripping you off because they are common problems

that's a full rear end superpro kit with absolutely everything. Labour would be 5-6 hours because that's more than what you need but might aswell with the rear out. So probably $1500 to replace all the rear end

Tailshaft centre bearing and coupling could be shot, just depends.

Suspension I would just find some 2nd hand ones for the meantime.

so now you know whats wrong (according to one place) fix the serious issues/safety issues yourself or get somewhere else to do it and then get a roadworthy somewhere else and fix the rest when money and time allows.

I drive a 20+ year old patrol everyday and im almost certain every bush/seal/shock/spring is pretty well f*cked not in an unsafe way, but more of a - has alot of freeplay and knocking and groaning than it should way. If you can live with a few knocks ect im sure all that stuff listed wont need to be changed right away.

Thanks guys, The one problem in doing it myself is that I only have a limited amount of time to hand the RWC in to vicroads or the current rego on it will be cancelled (purchased from a licensed dealer without a roadworthy.) The car has 150xxxkm. He did say the Tailshaft bearing and couple were both completely stuffed, Would this be noticeable driving? It did have a decent diff type clunk but I couldnt feel much else (the gear stick had a slight vibration but it was all the time even at idle)

without checking my times guide info, it looks close to the 15hr mark but would be recommending a 4 wheel alignment rather than just a front wheel alignment based on his price quoted, the other option is paying another $150-!180 for an inspection from another shop and maybe having a smaller list or exactly the same items.

We can organise a rwc inspection if you needed a second opinion

I live in WA and we dont have that crap. BUT in the 80s when I was in NSW we use to take a carton of beer to the guy to get a pink slip and all was sweet.

a dealer must sell you a vehicle that is "fit for the purpose"

if this car's licence will lapse in its current condition, then it is their problem.

you do not have to worry about if they have told you it has no warranty etc etc...

if you purchased it knowing of problems (and they know you knew) then its for you to fix.

but if these are surprises, then they will be required to bring the vehicle to a roadworthy condition.
