Hi All

On yesterdays cruise on the m4  I noticed a vibration /  shudder that appeared  at 100ks and contiued through to 120ks then went away.

The source seems to come from the back of the vehicle and is more severe when the car is under load accelerating through this speed range in either 3rd or 4th gear ( Auto ). It even caused the drivers visor to vibrate in its clip !!

I did collect a pot hole a few days ago with the rear drivers side wheel, so I am hopeful that it might be related to that ie lost weight off the wheel throwing the balance out, though my gut feel unfortunately is it might be the tail shaft.

Would be very appreciative if you guys could provide some thoughts on this matter before I put the beast in for its 15k service.

Thanks in advance

WhiteTee

WhiteTee,

I guess that its the tail shaft out of phase or balance, just try a tail shaft out of another car that does not have the problem,( that yours does) if the problem goes away then you know for sure what is causing the vibration.

I assume that you dont have out of balance wheel/tyres, would pay to check this first before checking out the tailshaft.

Good luck with the problem.

Peter

Guys,

here is a new one.. I have done 42,000ks in my Auto XR6T. Late last week I had the Diff replaced due to crown wheel and pinion noises and low speed full lock clunking. Now when I am doing 90+ these seems to be a vibration through the car. It is almost audible. I initaly thought that they may have nocked one of the weights off one of the wheels thus causing a vibration but they seem to be still there... Is it possible that they have got the tail shaft out of Phase, or the drive axels from the diff to the wheels out of phase?.. I will be calling them today to arrange for them to relook at it..! Will keep you posted..

Sorry guys but not much of a techo.

What does out of phase mean?

Mine is not the tailshaft as I have had it balanced and rebuilt by hand and balanced again.

Its going in next Monday for an indefininte time. Guess they will be checking stub axles etc if a wheel/tyre transplant doesnt solve the problem.

Guy's,

Good advice, starting to worry lots now,

Had all 4 tyres replaced, wheels balanced by Ford and told it was spot on. Prob still there,

Took it to a Tyre and Wheel centre (won't mention names) the following week and they found unbalanced sets on 3 of 4 corners, which an out of round tyre on passenger rear, which they managed to balance to zero.

Problems better but still there!!!

Suspect the tailshaft or what ktford said,

Anyone else had the problem, swapped wheels and had it continue?

Cheers,

Rick

Somemore info here passed on verbatim from a dealer so make up your own mind.

In order to balance the tailshaft you need equipment from Ford of which there are about 6 in the country. I assume that this is some kind of laser equipment.

This is used and weights added to the bolting area to balance up.

It is not possible to balance without this equipment and there is a long waiting list.

So if your dealer has balanced the tailshaft at a regular service, it may be that he is B***S***ing you, or was very lucky and had already borrowed the equipment

The tailshaft has to be balanced on the vehicle, so simply chnaging over the tailshaft probably would not cure, although if it is the problem, the vibration would probably occur at a different frequency (read speed)

Of course first check would be wheel balance noting the experience of rakrzy

Sorry guys but not much of a techo.

What does out of phase mean?

Out of phase is when a shaft equipped with two or more universal joints has them at the wrong angle in relation to each other. Can cause all sorts of vibrations. Modern half shafts do not have phasing issues, as they are equipped with CV joints not unis. The BA tailshaft will also not have phasing issues, as it has a rubber coupling, then a uni, then a CV joint.

If at any stage the vehicle requires a replacement diff assy or drive shaft assy's the drive train "HAS" to be rebalanced. If they have failed to do this it can cause damage to the original drive train components(eg transmission, driveshft, etc)

Something easy to check for you guys though(and I know this sounds stupid, but hey it does cause vibrations through the car. This is from actual experiance) if your vehicle is fitted with a bonnet protector that is secured by 2 clips, remove it and drive the vehicle and see if the vibration is still there. If it is gone head to your dealer for a replacement revised protector. If the vibration is still there climb under the vehicle and look at the spare wheel well where it goes up behind the diff.Look closely and make sure that the body deadener that is sprayed at the top of the diff isn't toughing the rear diff mount damper(a big round saucer shaped thingy with a bolt in the middle of it).If it is simply cut the excess off so it no longer contacts the mount and go for a spin and see if that helped.Other than that it sounds like you all have the same driveline probs as a lot of people.

Hope this helps
