As I'm sure most people have gathered my axe grinds against the Blau pricing/install model that essentially means you pay $750 get a video input into the car.

Aaron. With the Blaupunkt system, you actually get 5 AV inputs and 4 AV outputs not including the ICC. In alot of cases people would be paying for something they won't use. But I think the inputs/outputs lay a good foundation for an awesome multimedia setup.

Rob

I'm well aware of what you get for $750 (as quoted by Blau dealer).... In my opinion it's a nice box but totally unecessary for the majority of users when a single or dual input would do the trick.

Some people in this thread seem to think I just hang cr@p on X product just becuase I like to. Not the case, I've done my research, others could be well served doing the same.

A.

So Aron what's the alternative cost? I've purchased an older Travelpilot DX-N and I've got a modified Xbox, now what the cheapest, easiest way to hook these pupies up?

Cheers

Hi All,

As promised, I have called VDO directly to confirm what is possible with their system. I spoke to their technical guru to make sure the information was correct!

As expected and stated in an earlier post, the VDO system only allows for navigation to be displayed on the front screen. The statement made about DVD and reverse camera all being possible is not true and not possible using VDO equipment. This is why I said "Don't believe everything you hear"

I know it sounds like I am a biased Blau person,(I am Slightly  ) but I only replied on this topic to give you guy's the truth. I am not a sales guy so I don't know how to bullsh*t like a professional!!

Secondly, VDO have not produced or sold any interfaces to date..(They are coming soon??)

Turbocorty,

I still believe you to be wrong. The interface has been made but only arrived at VDO last week. All but 2 had been taken as of Friday morning when I got my hands on one (to be fitted next week). If you look on the website you will see that the standard unit that they use has components that you can buy off the shelf to fit. ie reversing camera, DVD player etc. I don't know who you were talking to but I was speaking to the Victorian Rep for VDO who knows his Sh@t. I will be a very upset camper if it isn't the case but he assured me that it was all good.

It seems to me that your source has been left out of the loop.

Hope I have got the right info, and if I haven't you will receive a written apology

PS. I doubt they would produce a product for only a little less that does far less than their market competitor. They wouldn't sell any!

Hi Yoda,

Trust me when I tell you that A/V (Reverse/DVD) input it is not possible. The source at VDO is the actual designer of the BA system and good friend of mine. I also have very good technical understanding of all their products so my conclusions are not something I have made up.

I don't want an apology from you, I just want everyone to know the truth about what is possible with the two systems.

Give VDO a call directly and find out for yourself. Or call Collin D (VDO Rep) and confirm once again - You may hear a different story..

Reverse camera and DVD playback is only possible when using the screen that comes with the MS5400 - Not with the BA kit. All the accessories you see on the VDO web site may not work when used in conjunction with the BA system..DVD and Reverse are just a couple!

Cheers

Thanks turbo,

It's interesting because I was speaking to Collin (he was on mobile) about it so we must have had a misunderstanding. Bugger!!!!!!!! Sounds like a Blau then. Only a couple hundred bucks difference so Blau definately good value.

Cheers, and thanks for the clarification.

PS. I apologise anyway

It will be because VDO have rigged a RGB output to their 5400 but probably don't have the ability to convert signals.... *shrugs* I know a Blue box that does it too.. Or Pioneer, or etc etc etc

They all cost int he same territory....

The DIY effort is exactly that, DIY and is limited by your own skills, research ability and funds. I know what price I can achieve a result with all the gear I want in the car, but that doesn't mean it's what others want.

If you want fully integrated NAV and nothing else VDO or Blau is the go. If you want NAV and extras VDO and Blau can have DIY stuff slotted in between... In fact you probably could go for a VDO NAV unit, running into the Blau IVSC5501 and outputting to your screen.

In other words there's a world of choice with more products out there. If we were in the US I'd be saying hacking a GEX would be schweet moite ;)

Hi Guys,

All I can say is "Don't believe everything that you hear".

I can guarantee you that Blau system is easier to use and the difference in speed is questionable!! (I have tested all models from Blau / Philips / VDO / and the street pilot)

Blau can offer a complete package including DVD playback..I don't think this is possible with VDO.

The RRP price might be cheaper for the VDO system, but that is just the Recommended Retail Price. Try asking the Blau dealer for a better price!

Reliability of such an expensive investment is also something to consider when purchasing.

See Yah!

I agree the Blaupunkt system is fantastic and after comparing it against other systems on the market would go this way any day..
