g'day lads,

I find myself in a bit of a pickle and I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Basically, I found a flash tuning device the CAPA ford flash 1 on ebay for about $150, I won the auction and I received the device yesterday.

I was under the impression that I could contact a CAPA dealer and order a custom tune program for my car as per the ad specified but upon ringing around I was told that the device was discontinued and I had to buy the xcal 3 if I wanted to tune the car.

I contacted the seller but he is being a real s**t c**t and refuses to take any responsibility despite noting in his ad that I could get a tune program for my car from a capa dealer or tuner for about $150.

Guys is there anything I can do? Is the device completely useless? It has loaded on it tunes for a BA XR8, I have a BA XR6T. Is there any way I can get the tune program I need.

Any help is appreciated,

Cheers

Lodge dispute - "Item not as described"

Count your losses and find as much info as you can and a tuner you can trust before you make your next move.

I think Capa can supply tunes for them still, but generic tunes are not a real good idea, no tuner with current software can communicate with the box at all

This, plus did you happen to pay via paypal with your CC? if you did call you bank and asked them to reverse the charge as the item is not as described and seller wont assist.

cheers for the responses fellas.

I've initiated a dispute so we'll see how that pans out and I agree, I'll definitely be doing a bit more research before future buys.

@ratter, do you have a contact person at CAPA, I flicked them a couple of emails through their website but I am yet to hear anything.

Thanks again

Gave them a couple of calls today without any answer I'll try again tomorrow. Anyhow hopefully it goes my way with the dispute then I'll look into an sct xcal3 device. how are the generic tunes on the device? In another thread I was told to stay away from intune motorsports in seven hills nsw, but they do offer a device with some 'proven' pre loaded tunes for a reasonable price. anyone can vouch for the programs, the tuner or flash device?

Yes those tunes are "proven"

To significantly increase the chances of your engine going bang.

You have been burnt once already. Where are you from? This will help everyone recommend a good workshop in your area.

As said ^^

Can almost guarantee that, even if you did get a generic tune you would be looking for more fairly quickly.

What seems cheap at the outset will end up costing you long term.

Find yourself a tuner that's recommended on the forums and you are comfortable dealing with/are on the same wavelength as you and can work with you on your plans. This way you do things right the first time and don't end up spending money to replace something you just paid for.

Which model and where are you?

Definitely stay away from generic tunes and intune.

Spend the time on research and the money on the correct solution you're after and get the right people to do it and you'll be happy as a pig in sh*t.

Try to cheap out, go ahead without a clear direction or get the wrong people to touch your vehicle and you may luck out and get it all working, but the chance of a catastrophic, expensive, time consuming failure is all too real.

Keep in mind - even with "just a tune" on the car there are some components that can still be a weak link, and can vary between models and year/kms. A trusted tuner will work with you to keep you informed of these, limit the tune to not put them in danger and know the most cost-effective replacements that are needed to ensure you get the maximum benefit and longevity out of your engine.

Good luck with chasing your refund. Please take your time to research, ask and confirm your upgrade path - there's a heap of experience on the forums (much of it gained by mistakes :P) and any cost savings you may try to find at the outset can end up costing you a lot more in the long run.

There's a heap of eBay stories throughout - everything from xCal's, injectors, intercoolers, turbo's, intakes etc that turned out to result in the person having to pay twice (or more) for the outcome they were after.

http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/76044-modding-your-fg-xr6-turbo/ is brilliant if you have an FG - basically gives a great idea of levels and order to aim for.
