So I got a call from the Dealer Principal this morning. They're paying for the genuine stripes to be fitted by the guy I want to fit them...guess that's a plus. He even mentioned getting them couriered to him for me. Not too bad an outcome I guess. He admitted that if I had it done by them it would be done by one of the workshop mechanics...ummm, pass.

Guy Decides to buy locally made low volume Iconic car Guy gets shafted by dealer for $20 worth of vinyl and is left with sour taste in mouth, Guy tells internet forum Internet forums tell other Guys

I think the problem lies here. "$20 worth of vinyl" - this is why the GT should not have stripes on it to begin with. It just ruins the image with something so cheap being the "obvious mark" from an exterior point of view. Why get so worried that it's not "perfect" when there's at least a 95% chance that the manufacturer of said "factory stripes" is of the same caliber/quality as the ebay stickers.

The problem with people is if they don't get a 100% perfect product, then they attack attack attack. I think this is the wrong mentality to begin with.

The stickers are sometimes installed by dealers, if the stickers were not installed by the factory. The dealership probably cut a corner to get them faster (not necessarily cheaper), to get the GT to you on time. At the time, it might have been more of a hassle to you to delay the car another week to procure genuine stickers, as opposed to getting some ebay ones within a day or two. In hindsight, of course you'd wait to save yourself this experience.

I get what you're saying Keith, but the dealer knowingly had a week before I could pick the car up, which would have been ample time to sort genuine decals. It's the fact that there were some fairly noticeable differences that myself and other enthusiasts picked up on straight away yet the dealer replied with "oh, I hadn't noticed that". I signed a contract with the stripes as a factory option...therefore I don't think it's too much to ask that I get genuine factory stripes put on the car, and lined up perfectly. Not a cheap set of copies that aren't even lined up correctly.

I like the stripes (when done properly), as Steve wrote earlier in this thread, a GT's visual signature is the stripes that have come in various forms over the years. This always made them stand out from every other car and made them seem a little bit special and a little bit ridiculous...which is part of the appeal for me.
