Fellow FG owners , first time poster, Member for years. Sorry for the long post

The reason I have completed the task below in sequence rather then in all one go is to offer other people possible explanations and the ability to narrow down individual components causing rear suspension noises. This was obviously at an added expense to me but a benifit to all other ford turbo enthusiasts.

After upgrading the power to a simple stage 1, at 98,000, I took upon myself the task of attempting to fix the endless symphony of knocks from the rear end of this otherwise great car. Rear end shocks replaced with monroe GT gas, Axle hop improved. NOT GONE. No knocks improved and all bushes where normal on the shocks.

First to fix negative camber issues, had negative three degress on each wheel. Upper adjustable control arms were installed from whiteline and front wheels shimmed. Camber sorted. Annoying rattle from back gone (sounded like a tin can) over continous shallow bumps.

Never had a diff knock on accelration from the back, however, after examining all the diff bushes, yep all split. Had axle hop that occured in the rain that was so severe that I thought I actually ripped out the diff. Superpro comforts in. Rear end firmed up. Axle hop improved 85% but NOT GONE. However after this two new knocks developed.

1st knock, would occur on a slightly inclined hill and slow take off. Massive knock from rear. Would happen 2 out of 10 times. Really annoying,Control blade bushes (whiteline comfort series fixed that). This also occured on my previous FG XT, also fixed with control blade bushes. The control blade bushes are the sole reason the control arm bushes become shagged (beside the sh*t quality rubber products). It is responsible for the forward and backward load on the suspension. When these are even weak everything swings and arms are not meant to swing front to back. Only up and down.

The one remaining knock that remains is that when raining there is a loud knock almost on every right turn associated with a bumb Sounds like a rubber mallot hitting the back. I can only ever replicate this in the dry under very hard right turns.

I have examined the exhaust for possible knocks and cant get it to do it. I even put an extra rubber on the last exhaust mount to ensure it did not hit the wheel well. However the problem remains.

The only things left to replace include: Rear front lower control arm, in the next week and the rear lower large control arm hyme joint (on the outer and the inner pivot bush) which the springs sit on.

So my question is has anyone had the above rear knock that remains when turning right. I am slightly less convinced it is a IRS issue, but I will continue to change things until I find it.

Thanks again and sorry for the long post.

Cheers

Dom

I had a squeak and knocking noise in the front passenger side of my car and it would come then hang around for a few days then it would disappear. Had it checked twice and the suspension was fine, needed a few things but it wasnt causing the noises as every time I took it the noise would vanish GRRR.

Anyway every so often I gerni the wheel arches and the next day the noise was back and I thought back and the other 2 times I has gernied the wheel arches the day before as well. In heavy rain it comes out but not as bad. been told it could be a body mount or just water getting into a suspension joint.

Thanks to the one person that responded to the topic and the countless views by others.

Found the noise.

Left swaybar link bushings (recently replaced with superpro and torqured correctly) were broken.

Replaced with OEM rubber. Now I have a silent rear FG. Almost as rare as winning lotto.

In addition. I recently replaced the D-link bushes on the front swaybar with nolathane. After 2 weeks it began to creak over bumbs, they require continuous re-greasing. So off they came and originals back on. Silent as ever. Firstly I did think it was the front upper control arm bushes (they were torn as well, and only after 98,000). I replaced this with new bushes reinforced with nolathane inserts but the noise reamined until the nolathane D-link swaybar bushes came off.

Cheers,

Dom

Glad you found the issue. Has been a bit wet recently in sydney and after driving in the rain the next morning the noise is there but clears up within a few kilometres. No rain no noise has me stumped .

Thanks for posting the issue and the fix. I have a knock coming from the rear end when turning right, but only at higher speeds if I corner slowly it's not there. But mine happens all the time not just when it's wet. My car only has 50k on it but it's a BF so maybe it's the age.
