so basically I bought a 2004 mk1 xr6 turbo from a dealer two days ago. it has been majorly serviced 10,000kms ago and has new coil packs and new spark plugs (week old) in drive when the engine is warm it idles very low and the car shakes and sometimes comes to a stall. I put it back in neutral and it starts up with a low idle again. any ideas what causes this/steps to take? also with my footdown it sometimes backfires, pretty standard thing but is this a issue?

pretty pissed off as when we test drove it and stuff it idled a lil lumpy but then was fine with fresh fuel but now I feel like ive bought a bag of sh*te.

I've been having similar issues, hasn't stalled on me yet though, I'd say it's a fuel issue, replace filter and check the sock on the pump pickup

I'd suggest the basics. Clean the throttle body as a first port of call for idle issues, then look for air leaks in and around the intake manifold.

Re the back firing, who replaced the coils/plugs? If the coils not genuines they are know to cause all sorts of issues. Is the car tuned? if it is spark plug gaps need to be adjusted accordingly.

I had the same problem dealt with it for 2 years. Replaced my TPS sensor with the BF ( rectangle NOT the triangle one ) as mine failed and put the car into limp mode a few times. It's been 100% fine after the replacement. No stalling, no low idle, throttle response was back. Was a very happy upgrade. Also cleaned the Throttle body with contact cleaner, and all plugs. So it was one or the other. Either way, it's fixed now.

I had a similar problem with my 03 auto,

Idle was low around 600rpm in drive and reverse but was very lumpy, cleaned throttle body and still lumpy, then checked for a vaccum leak and the inlet manifold gasket was poked.

replaced it myself and Idle is now smooth but still quite low in D and R, around 550rpm, but in N it sits happily at 800ish.

Still dont know why lol I just had the auto box rebuilt so it cant be that.
