Hi guys,

I know a top fuel dragster can beat a super car / F1 over the 1/4 mile from a standing start, even if the other car had a 200kmph rolling start. My question is does anyone know where I can find footage of such an event?

Apparently it was done and was on the web for a while, but if can't find it anywhere!

Cheers guys!

I don't think it has been done

But on the topic of top fuel cars this is a good video of how much power and noise they make

Cheers wombat,

It's crazy how much power they make, and an interesting fact I read today was that they are only roughly 8000hp, the true figure is unknown since there's no Dyno big enough to actually measure their power!! What a feeling that must be to drive that!

Hmm slightly off topic but on the no dyno big enough thing, how do they measure ship engines ect that make 10's of thousands of hp and then some, estimated output I guess?

Large diesel engine can be run on dynos, that are specifically designed for diesel engines.

Horsepower calculation is a product of torque.

Large diesel engines may only rev to 500 or 600 rpm flat out, but produce massive amounts of torque.

However I would think that the ocean going freighters and passenger liners engine horsepower would be a calculated figure, much like the Top Fuel Engine.

The other issue with the top fuel engine is the rpm they spin them at, 8000 -9000 rpm.

Most engines produce linear/progressive type power, however Top Fuel and Top Alcohol engines both produce explosive instant and progressive power/torque.

The dyno's simply physically cant handle this type of punishment.

Regards

Dave.

Ship engines are calculated, they are completely different to any truck engine, for a start they are a slow speed so they max out at around 109rpm and make 80,000 odd hp in some. Others are diesel electric so they have 4-6 smaller generators powering electric thrusters so that's how they manage the calculate the power they make.

Great article Ryno, thanks for that.

I race in modified bike (hopefully stepping up to group two in comp bike in September) and pretty much spend most of the time hanging out in the pits talking sh*t, but I'll always make the effort to go up and watch top fuellers or nitro funny cars at least a couple of times each meeting when they're on.

If you've never been in the stands when these go past, you need to get down to the track and experience it.

It's much more than just an aural experience.
