No Boost?

Check the wastegate actuator arm, mine popped off once, just a circlip, same kinda thing boost guage would hit around 0 but feel no boost.

Well mine's stock (B series) and has been seeing a 15PSI tune for a number of years now. Turbo is 4 years old and has done about 125,000km (was replaced under warranty just before I modified the car).

I've got a boost leak on my BF manual. I've checked all the turbo piping, removed them all and checked for splits. Checked the boost tee fittings everything looks ok. I get a really loud air leaking noise that sounds almost like a belt slipping, doesn't happen until about 3k on full boost and the torque just never comes, feels like its making about 6psi though haven't had a chance to datalog and see what boost its actually making. No DTC fault codes.

 

Exhaust note is normal and it still makes a good 6-8psi so I don't think the wastegate has stuck open. Turbo spins freely with a normal amount of oil in the intake.

 

Any other fittings that tend to fail I should be checking? All the major intake pipes seem fine so I'm assuming its either the boost controller has failed (fairly sure that should throw a DTC) or some vac line somewhere has failed. I'm trying to get hold of a smoke tester to pressure test the entire intake but just want some ideas of common points of failure first.

Gasket failed and I replaced the studs and gasket about a year ago now. I would imagine a leak bad enough to stop boost building would be quite loud, this is loud but nothing like when the gasket failed.

You can hear a leaking flange noise when the turbo loosens up enough from the manifold. I would check it but I don't think that is the issue.

 

It sounds like a loose clamp on the cooler piping. Sometimes when clamps are flogged out they will feel like they are tight but they will still be loose cos they're bent internally. The air leaking past a clamp makes a squealing noise sometimes. 

 

Just something to check anyway.

Yeah they look good but I guess there's no real way to see if they are sealing without pressurising it. Will take it down the road and put it on the dyno and stick my head in the engine bay, might be easier as no one seems to have a smoke tester available.

You will see the silicone deform slightly as the clamp tightens. Also a stuffed clamp will often have the gear drive click or bend sideways as it is tightened. I haven't tried it myself but I have heard of hairspray being used as a glue to help it stay together and seal up.

 

You should be able to narrow it down pretty quickly on a dyno though.
