I think Toads and Headsex would disagree that a well tuned BA1 motor is a hand grenade.

"well tuned" being the key point.

OP, as mentioned, get the gate ported properly and get the tune tickled up and you'll be laughing.

I have tuned a couple of Pootrols with Barra's in them over here in WA and they work well.

Ba engines are the weakest of the bunch, but with a good tune they can last and do pretty well (headsex etc....) as others have said a high flo cat/no cat, will cause over boost and give you grief.. tune the thing, not only will it be better for the motor, you get more benefits too, more power, torque, fuel economy, drivability etc..... Well worth the $$$

How long would it be safe to drive without a tune? The main concern is a lack of local tuners (that I'm aware of) I know of one, but I don't know anything about their reputation (could be good, could be bad. I really don't know) I can still run the cat, it would just be further down the pipe (would be behind the gearbox/ transfer due to lack of space). I would also probably need to run a single 3 inch exhaust.

I probably should mention I won't be raping it everytime I drive it like some people do.

What does it cost to get the gate ported, and is it a critical thing to do in my circumstance? I don't suppose you have any photos of their exhaust setup do you? I'm sure you've noticed the Ford exhaust is on the same side as the Patrol's transfer & front prop shaft. I haven't seen how the lack of space is overcome yet.

Making the trip to a good tuner would be your best bet bud. I travel 7 hours to get to my tuner, 430rwkw on BA motor still goin strong. As others have stated it all comes down the tune which I feel its whats held mine together. But as I said I travel just over 7 hours to get there.

Fair enough, I hope I don't have to travel that far lol.

I would budget around $500 for a port job, opt "B" (depending on space) would be to retain the ford car from either a BA/F they should be stacked ten deep at any performance exhaust/tune shop.

If you run the stock cat it will provide the restriction as for intended and a minor tune touch up will keep everything safe.

not the best plan for out and out performance but it will help preserve the motor and 240kw and the torque of the Barra should motivate the patrol nicely.

I dont have any exhaust routing pics unfortunately. but I do recall both car having substantial body lifts which probably aided clearance.
