Masda74 raises an excellent point though.. I see a lot on various car forums where some poor bloke has a bit of a bingle and every f*cker comments 'oh you should have done this, should have done that, learn to drive' etc etc..

I've done numerous track days, defensive driving courses, advanced driving courses etc.. And I'm fairly confident when I am throwing a vehicle around because I know what it's going to do and what I have to do..

When a vehicle steps out on you and you aren't expecting it to cause you are just puttering along to work and the roundabout is slippery or something else happens.... That's what separates the men from the boys.. Personally this boy hit a power pole and it freaking hurt..

Utes have more weight over the rear than sedans. The suspension makes them tail happy, not the weight.

I am sure that you have gathered that I am not that knowledgeable, so for that reason, could you explain why the ute is heavier than a sedan. I would have thought they were lighter.

Not entirely sure mate, the main things would be the weight of leaf springs over coils and the fact that the utes have a chassis in the rear to support the weight. Good news is the weight is down low, bad news it it still will want to kick out more than a sedan as it has less give.

When you think about whats in the rear end you can see why its heavier or atleast as heavy in the back. Have you ever pulled that tub off your ute? god damn, the thing weighs like 200kg. Those leaf springs are between 30-40kg each, plus the rest of the rear chassis, diff etc. In a sedan, its basically all just sheetmetal. Plus the IRS makes it much more well behaved. as soon as you upset leaves, they cant compensate like IRS can, they are used because they are good at handling weight. They will bounce at the drop of a hat, and bounce=wheelspin ;)

My ute had 300rwkw, would skate invos through 1st,2nd and sometimes chrip 3rd in the dry. In the wet, dont even bother trying to drive agressively. 1st through 4th upto 100kmh would result in getting sideways seriously quickly, little turbo for the win! just gotta adjust your driving style to suit

One of the things that comes to mind about loosing traction at 60km/h (Sct911) is that this is being done in a ute, with little weight at the back. Both yourself and I have sedans. This means that there is more weight at the back and more traction. I reckon it could also be the tune and how the boost comes on and the amount of torque at play.

That being said, I think the biggest issue may be the drivers. I dont know you personally, so I cant judge you, but I do know that when I loose traction on the roads, my butt hole tends to do a lot of exercise trying to keep control of the car.

This is due to the lack of experience driving a performance car.

I really wish that Perth had skidpan days where we could learn to drift in the wet, in a safe and controlled environment.

Then we may have better controll of the car at 60km/h.

;)

exactly right, tune and things like turbo size play a major role. fg turbo, 12psi and 800nm @ 2400 is going to be serously tail happy, a GTX35 @380 on the same boost and torque with a much linear tune will hook up and feel like a jet fighter.

Thanks for explaining all that guys, I don't have a UTE and so I would not have a clue. Interesting to know that the UTE weighs more at the rear.

Wow - over 2300 kerb weight for the ute, under 1800 for the sedan

That's a huge difference - unless the specs are including the tray filled to the max.

Those specs are off. My ute has come in at 1860kg with half a tank of gas. Everyone has covered fact the live axle makes it so tail happy at the back. But yes it is a common misconception that the ute is lighter. Think the sedans are normally about 100kg lighter.
