Getting a flare from 3rd to 4th only when the car is cold, soon as I drive for 2-3 mins it doesn't happen. Only does it at like 2500-3000rpm (never tried at wot because dont rev it out when cold)

Its an fg stock until 90,000kms then 300rwkw until now (100,000). At 90 had full flush and oil replaced with GW syntrans and had external cooler installed behind fog light and heat exchanger disconnected.

It's not supposed to have a zf tune but who knows what the tuner did, box doesnt feel like it shifts any differently though

Cheers

Yea I was worried it might be clutch plates!

Im 90% sure it doesn't have a zf tune cause the tuner said they always do it and I specifically requested not wanting one so hope my request was upheld.

I spoke to an auto shop in town today and they think that theres a crack in this internal housing thing (didn't ask what it was, they just showed me one on a bench, maybe it holds the clutch plates?). Said the reason its only it happens when cold is because the crack would be so fine and close up when heated up, but doesn't make sense because after 2 minutes it doesn't happen again and the gearbox surely can't be more than 40degrees by then, which I thought wouldn't be enough to seal a crack from metal expansion.

Anyone offer any light on this potentially being the issue?

Jack up the RHS of the car just enough to get your head under, and pull the filler plug out the RHS bottom rear of the box " with the engine idling in neutral" and put some more GW Syntrans in until it trickles out the side. Then lower the car while it is still idling and wait for the trickle of oil to almost stop. Jack the car back up, replace the plug and do it up "gently". Then turn the car off and lowering it to the ground.

Do it on level ground ofcourse and you will need Allen keys about 10mm or 3/8 by memory and a oil syringe with a hose from repco. Also a container that will fit under the auto box with the car lowered to the ground.
Do that before you worry yourself to much. There is plenty of time to worry later lol.

I thought all gaps expanded when a material is heated up? Like heating a tight nut to remove it more easily.

bellato my ZF does the exact same thing first up in the morning; I have just learned to live with it. I suspect its because it takes a few more minutes for fluid to start warming up whereas those cars with heat exchangers would probably start building temp almost instantly.

Whilst it's only the very first 3-4 shift of the day and its not a harsh or dramatic slip I haven't bothered to look into it anymore.

So got a 2nd opinion on the trans and turns out it was down 500ml of oil. Topped up and flare is gone. The gearbox still has an issue with 3rd gear. When 3rd goes to shift the revs drop a little, they pick back up then it engages 4th and they drop back down. This shop doesn't seem to think there is anything but surely the gear should shift better. Might get a zf tune to firm up the shift to get rid of the sloppiness
