So my zf is on its way out and I want to rebuild it myself, had quite a bit of experience with autos so im pretty confident, Just want to know if there would be any surprises with after market parts like input shafts fitting straight in or if there are any modifications needed. Can pre machined drums that fit extra clutches be bought off the shelf?

Or would you say leave it to the pros?

Amateurs built the ark professionals built the titanic. If you have no time constraints with the car I'm sure it's doable. I have a link to a Jag zf6hp26 rebuild, will dig it up and post

Edit: was a range rover trans but still 6hp26

Depends what kit you put in it, if you go a kit that is 400kw plus then I think some minor machining has to be done. However, if you the the manual and set your bearing preloads right then I think the autos are easy.

+1 for the rangerover site teardown. Lots of hq pics & good detail. If you had a little spare money, time & the inclination, there are zf boxes that come up on ebay from time to time. Having a replacement might be a good idea. You could also mod the other then sell it. Might make some money back on it?

I know welshy and his cousin built their own box to a 500kw spec and it slipped within months. And they are both pretty cluey lads... But like the others said if you got the time and money go for it.

Depends what sort of bloke you are. Some are attention to detail, read up heaps and will get whatever they put their hands on right. Others will have 20 years experience in building boxes and still phuck it up.

I'd say if you are the former and a bit of mechanical experience with autos then go for it.

If you go ahead please post up what you do. A nice big clean bench where you can lay everything out methodically is a must

I have seen that range rover site, its pretty good plus I have a 6hp26 rebuild manual here and I can take all the time I need with this car to get it right,

Still not sure which route to take as rebuilds arent really that expensive so I could take it to somewhere like Monsta torque and not have to worry about anything going wrong
